Jazz Friday #31 Dhafer Youssef - The man with the Oud

🇩🇪 Geboren und aufgewachsen ist der Tunesier 1967 in Térboulba. Die Lieder der Koranschule und die mit ihnen verbundenen islamischen Gesangsstile bilden die Grundlage seiner musikalischen Ausbildung.
Mit 15 kauft er sich sein erstes Instrument. Nach dem Schulabschluss migriert er nach Graz, um den amerikanischen Traum zu realisieren: Er arbeitet sich vom Tellerwäscher bis zum Pizzaverkäufer hoch, und verlegt seinen Wohnsitz nach Wien. Dort spielt er sich mit viel Engagement in die multikulturelle Künstlerszene mit all ihren bekannten Gesichtern.

Doch er mag kein Name-Dropping: "Ich brauche das nicht, mit großen Namen zu spielen. Jeder Musiker hat seine eigene kleine Geschichte zu erzählen. Nicht alle können das in ihrer Musik ausdrücken. Aber wenn du es kannst, brauchst du dich mit niemandem zu schmücken".

Er zählt sich selbst zu den faulsten Sängern der Welt, spielt eine arabische Kurzhalslaute, die Oud, und mischt in seiner Musik arabische Melodien mit handfestem Jazz zu bisher ungehörten Kompositionen und Improvisationen.

🇬🇧 The Tunisian was born and raised in 1967 in Térboulba. The songs of the Koranic school and the Islamic singing styles associated with them form the basis of his musical education.

He bought his first instrument at the age of 15. After finishing school, he migrates to Graz to realize the American dream: He worked his way up from dishwasher to pizza salesman and moved his residence to Vienna. There he plays himself into the multicultural artist scene with all its familiar faces.

But he doesn't like name dropping: "I don't need to play with big names. Every musician has his own little story to tell. Not everyone can express that in their music. But if you can, you don't have to "adorn" yourself with anyone.

He counts himself among the laziest singers in the world, plays an Arabic short-necked lute, the oud, and mixes Arabic melodies with solid jazz in his music to previously unheard compositions and improvisations.
