I've tried to engage with the small Japanese community on steemit, but it's a little hard for me because it's been five years since I've used Japanese and I'm focused on writing a lot of english posts and engaging with my English speaking followers.

Honestly I think there is a real cultural divide with the international community and most Japanese individuals because of this idea that most Japanese have, "we are different" "island country" blah blah blah. Also, more than a true language barrier, most Japanese just lack confidence in speaking English. Lastly there is the Japanese tendency to avoid topics which can may make someone feel "awkward", And while I greatly respect this cultural desire to preserve 和 , it basically makes it really difficult to talk about most deep and interesting topics. These barriers affect the relationship between Japanese and non Japanese on steemit the same way they do anywhere else.

Every culture has a cultural barrier when dealing with the international community, even Americans and British who have (I would say unfairly) dictated what international cultural looks like. It's great that Japanese are so good at preserving their culture, but the inability to adapt to unfamiliar situations makes it difficult to thrive in this kind of international setting.

I'm really interested in sharing the deeper thoughts of Japanese people, and discussing these things with Japanese users who find them interesting. As you know, Japanese culture really fascinates many people around the world. I hope that soon we can get past the food and Sakura and holidays and anime and start learning how Japanese think and feel.
