They have similar bathhouses in South Korea. But the reason those bathhouses are there is that Japan colonized Korea for a few decades, and brought over much of their culture to Korea -- including the Japanese language and bathhouses.
When the Japanese were booted out of Korea, the Koreans stopped speaking Japanese, immediately. They retained the bathhouses. Wise choice!
