Mineral Mondays : Cerastie, Sakura Ishi 桜石 From Kyoto, Japan

in #japan7 years ago

We picked up some more cerasite recently at the Tokyo Gem & Mineral show. This time around we were able to pick up some of the rare pink variety as well as cerasite in the matrix. All the specimens come from Kyoto-ken, Kameoka-shi and I will be listing some of them in our Etsy shop later this week.

Cerasite is a muscovite pseudomorph after Indialite + Cordierite forming a trapiche crystal. It is nick named Sakura Ishi 桜石 after it's sakura petal shape. Trapiche is also seen in gems such as emeralds, tourmalines, saphires & more.

That's really cool! I don't know anything about minerals or gems, but still enjoyed reading and seeing the photos. Makes me wonder what people first thought it was or how it came into existence when they saw it many years back.

Ah, but you knew enough to buy your wife a diamond ring right?

It's shaped like a cherry blossom and so it's treasured in Japan.

Who knows, you might have something out on your land?!

True.... LOL About the coolest thing we found was an arrowhead while digging the trench for our power line to our home. Scoured the rest of the dirt but never found another.
