Klute is a UK based Drum and Bass & Techno DJ, Producer and owner of Commercial Suicide record label. He had a huge influence on me because he was the first big DJ I met that was humble and normal. No superstar bullshit attitude. He also was and continues to be one of the best producers. Part of that stems from being the drummer for a punk rock band called "The Stupids" from the UK. He was a musician before he was a DJ and it showed in his production. This series was named "Tokyo Splendor" after one of Klute's song "Splendor". Now on with the show.

So, I was going to be playing at 06s at Womb! This was a big deal! I had to really throw down to solidify my name in Japan. While we were already starting to create a name for ourselves with our club night Structure, this was the last level of legitimacy in the scene. Not only that, it was a super club which packed about 500 - 1000 people.

Fast forward to that night. I came on at 3 or 4 am and I had a surprise, a promotional remix from Kemal & Rob Data, Faith in Chaos' "Possession". The club was rammed, I stepped up and put the need on the record. The song starts out with a distorted half beat, like a hip hop break and this crazy female, dominatrix vocal and then the drop, BOOM! Literally, the sub-bass hits hard, then Kemal & Rob's metallic, techno drums and the phasing, LFO baseline. The dance floor went crazy and then fucking Rewind!!!!(A rewind is when a DJ spins the record backward and re-starts it) This is that song and below is what is looked like.

I remember DJ Aki, the head of 06s coming up to me and asking what the fuck that song was. It was such a fantastic memory.

I actually asked my DJ partner Yu, to throw down some tunes too so we switched off after I did my intro and rocked the crowd until the lights came on. The vibe from the crowd was palpable. It was euphoric and absolutely one of the best times I have ever had.

When we finished up we did the time honored tradition of eating ramen at around 5am with a bunch of people. I believe the ramen shop is still there at the bottom of the street Club Asia is on. After that I raced home to sleep.

As things were in full swing now I needed to get more serious about being a DJ. Two things this entailed, money and producing tunes. The former you needed to survive and the latter you needed to really take everything to the next level. So I began making mix CDs to sell and using a music making software called Reason. Before I could really dive into either though I had to fly back to California to make some money to pay the bills and to meet Klute.

I met Klute at a LA event called Koncrete Jungle he was playing at. As I mentioned above he was super normal. Or maybe I am weird and he is like me? Anyway I told him what we were doing in Tokyo and we wanted to bring him over to DJ. He was totally down with it and said to let him know when so he could check his availability. And like that we had tentatively booked Klute. It would turn out to be one of the funniest and strangest Japan tours ever.

I worked for a few weeks, picked up as many new records as I could, then flew back to Japan at the end of November. When I talked to everyone about Klute they were super excited and couldn't believe we were getting such a big DJ to play at out new party. Somehow word had gotten to 06s that we were planning on bringing him over though and they insisted he play at Womb instead. In exchange they would also let us play with Klute, have DJ Aki play at Structure and send us on tour with Klute to Osaka & Kyoto! It was too good a deal to pass up and so we agreed. Then it was time for Structure, gigs every weekend, and our NYE Super party at Club Asia & Vuenos.
