Suntory's The Hakushu Single Malt Whisky Review

in #japan7 years ago (edited)

Delicious stuff!

After last review's dismal experience, it is a joy to be back into a good bottle and a beautiful expression from the Suntory Hakushu distillery.

Mt. Kaikomaga-take, where the Hakushu distillery is located.

Nose.

Menthol and solvent are mixed with a caramel punch, undercut by herbs and spices, melded with lightly toasted marshmallows.

Body.

Herbs and fresh-cut grasses meet a smoky caramel sweetness. Fresh cucumbers, herbal botanicals, celery notes and white pine. Extremely pungent peat smoke cascades into clear, fresh, snowy mountain water. The smoke is complemented by notes of melon, bold spearmint and herbal grasses.

Finish.

Smoky peat, fresh pine, and black pepper. The caramel sweetness immediately subsides leaving a pleasant, freshwater herbal smoke mingled with botanicals and spices.

Final Rating: 3.5 / 5 Stars.

Delightful stuff! Just perfect for a summertime highball, but sufficiently smoky and rich for a winter's evening alone with a book!

I tried one of these once at a ryokan. Delightful stuff to sip while relaxing in an outdoor private hot spring with a gorgeous view of Mt. Fuji. Ah, now I want to go on vacation again!

Ahh! Sounds wonderful!!!
