Hello all you wonderful and amazing human beings. Welcome to your daily^† look at interesting anniversaries, events, and births related to Japan on this day in history.

Today is V-J Day in the US, the anniversary of the formal end of WWII, in which Japan signed the surrender document on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Many other countries, such as the UK, celebrate V-J Day on August 15th which is the anniversary of when Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration. In his announcement of the end of the war, President Truman said that V-J Day must wait upon the formal signing of the surrender terms, hence the US's different celebration date.

And... that's pretty much it for interesting stuff. Wikipedia tells us that it's the anniversary of the wedding of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken, but that is incorrect. They were married in January. If I had the energy to fight the Wikipedia editors^‡ I'd submit a correction, but I can't be bothered.
