Come with me and try some Japanese Potato Snacks - じゃがりこ

Jagariko - Japanese Potato Snacks 😁 😁

Jagariko is a Japanese crispy potato snack in the shape of French fries. The word Jagariko (じゃがりこ) is a combination of the two words Jagaimo and Rikako. Jagaimo (じゃがいも)🥔 means potato and Rikako (りかこ) is a Japanese female name.
"It appears that the employee behind the creation had a friend named Rikako, who instantly fell in love with this snack." source

This snack comes in a small cup that looks like a miniature version of cup noodles. It comes in a mix of different flavours. The three in the picture are the salad(サラダ🥗), cheese(チーズ🧀) and potato butter (ジャがいバター) flavours.

Here below, Jagariko Cheese open so you can get a feel for the size and shape. As with most Japanese snacks they don't feel overly fat and unhealthy. These have a light salty taste and a very subtle taste of cheese. Jagariko has a very hard but thin surface with lots of air inside. This makes them adorably crunchy and lovely to eat!! :)

The subtle flavours, as in this Jagariko cheese, is very common for Japanese snacks. If you are used to a lot of flavours, rich and fat snacks, you might have a hard time getting used to the versions sold in Japan. You might think they have no taste at all or are meant for small children.

One very distinct exception though, which can be a surprise for many in Europe or America, are the fish flavoured snacks. Not being used to the smell or taste of fish/sea food flavoured snacks can be some experience, but I’m not trying to scare you, it is definitely something worth trying. ;) A potato snack with shrimp flavour is a good starting point if it is your first time and curious to try. After that you can go straight to the dried whole mini fishes!
(Imagine chewing on a crispy mini minnow. As long as it is not a minnow from Minnow Support Project. 😁)

Have you ever tried Japanese snacks? What did you think?

Oh yes, I tried them last week in Osaka, loved them! :D

Nice! Happy you could try them. There are a lot of interesting snacks in Japan.
Did you have Okonomiyaki or Takoyaki in Osaka?

I had takoyaki in Osaka, they were sooo good! Better than the ones I had in Tokyo before. I didn’t eat any okonomiyaki this time, but I had it two years ago in Tokyo and I loved it! :)

Takoyaki + Beer = heaven :) It is really a nice streetfood.

Thank you for this nice post, never tried it but I think they are tasty..

Thx for the comment!
If you live close to Amstelveen you should be able to find them in one of the Japanese stores. Shilla and Dank are the name of two shops. Dank u wel en tot later!

Dank je voor de info. Mocht ik ze tegen komen ga ik ze zeker proberen.

Looks fun and delicious :D

Makes me want to hop on a plane and go on a food-tasting adventure!

No better place for food tasting than in Japan. 😀

I miss having good Japanese food here in the States. It seemed a lot more authentic in the northeast compared to my current location... :O

Today I went to the shop and asked for the snacks, they only got the fish taste, that was already super delicious. I would like to try a more spicy :-) :-)
Thanks for this blog

Where do you live? Interesting they only had the fish taste. Is it called Tarako butter (たらこバター)? If it is, then it is the one with taste of fish roe.
