Jainism vs Christianity

Jainism is older then Christianity (if interested to read more when finished then read further on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_Karma_(Jainism)

That is funny right? Because most likely you HAVE heard about Christianity but either way Jainism is a form of Hinduism / Buddhism.

They have actually a symbol that is similar to the nazi's (as you can see):

In Christianity you have the deadly sins but in Jainism there are four 'kasaya':

  • krodha (anger),
  • lobha (greed),
  • mana (ego) and
  • maya (deceit).

Out of the many causes of bondage, emotions or passions are considered as the main cause of bandha or bondage. The karmas are literally bound on account of the stickiness of the soul due to existence of various passions or mental dispositions.

There are fewer then in Christianity and I think that is good because they have split it up into more topics; it is in a way closer to psychology then a religion.

The passions like anger, pride, deceit and greed are called sticky (kaṣāyas) because they act like glue in making karmic particles stick to the soul resulting in bandha.

Negating kashayas can be done by remembering the opposites of kasahayas : Opposite of Krodha (Anger) is Kshama (Forgiveness). To avoid Krodha kashayas, one needs to remember to forgive. Opposite of lobha (greed) is Daan (Charity), one needs to remember to give away. Opposite of Mana(Ego) is humility, one needs to be humble. Opposite of Deceit is to honesty, one needs to be honest in all conditions to not get deceit kashayas.

Most difficult Kashaya to overcome is Greed.

When he wishes that which is good for him, he should get rid of the four faults—anger, pride, deceit and greed—which increase the evil.

The missing ones:

  1. Lust (just read it; again I find it better then the christian story of you will go to hell for having sex before marriage; here you actually have an explanation that will actually help you in overcoming those chains):
  • Purusa veda (the male sex and corresponding sex passion) - Through this, in the man the desire for union with a female is produced. Also man has at first an exceedingly strong desire, which disappears as soon as his lust is satisfied.
  • stri veda (the female sex and corresponding sex passion) – Through this, in a woman the desire for union with a man is excited. Also the desire in the woman is weak so long as she is untouched, but grows into immensity through the enjoyment of intercourse.
  • napumsaka veda (the third sex and corresponding sex passion) – Effects the third sex belong all those beings who have no sexual organs. The sexual desire is with them exceedingly strong because it is directed towards men and women. It is to be compared to the burning of a town, which lasts long and finds no satisfaction.
  1. Envy = explained elsewhere (Darsana mohaniya karman; I am trying to get you to self learn the topic).
  1. Gluttony = also kind of like Greed but also similar to how I have linked Envy.
