Durante la notte il sonno ristoratore, tanto agognato, si rivela tardivo, discontinuo e agitato.
Nel loro cervello c'è come un turbinio tempestoso: allo assopimento momentaneo si alterna un senso di dormiveglia fatto di insicurezza per i progetti futuri da costruire nel presente e senza gli autorevoli consigli di chi non è più.
Tutte le preoccupazioni, anche le più indistinte, si fanno dominanti, intollerabili, fino alle prime ore dell'alba.
Il tintinnio dell'orologio della vicina chiesa, che scandisce le ore, annuncia che un nuovo giorno ha inizio e segna le sette del mattino.
Si alzano alquanto intontite, sembra abbiano difficoltà ad affrontare la giornata.
Sulla scrivania giacciono ammonticchiate numerose lettere che attendono di essere lette e corredate dalle rispettive risposte prima di essere evase.
Ma Francesca dedica scarsa attenzione al tutto, non ha voglia d'impegnarsi in un lavoro che considera non urgente.
Preferisce fare niente, stare al balcone, he resistono ancora al primo freddo immergersi nella contemplazione del panorama che sta intorno alla sua abitazione.
Si rende conto che gli alberi che la delimitano hanno foglie del colore della ruggine e del bronzo e sono bagnate di rugiada quasi allo stato di brina.

Il suo sguardo indugia sull'altura che le sta di fronte dove torreggia, appollaiato, un turrito castello medioevale e allogata, a poca distanza e in posizione degradante, la chiesa madre.
I due monumenti solleticano quotidianamente l'interesse di francesca.
D'inverno, quando la neve scendendo a larghe falde fa la sua apparizione, adagiandosi silenziosamente sugli abeti e sugli ontani, sui quali si sono formati dei lunghi aghi di ghiaccio si intessa un ricamo di incomparabile bellezza.

Francesca è tentata di dispensarli dal momento che non si tratta di suoi parenti, ma di semplici conoscenti.
Poi ricordando che la coppia le era stata presentata dal marito, alcuni mesi prima della sua scomparsa, assicura che avrebbe atteso con gradimento la loro visita.
Ora le finestre del salone, protette da pesanti tendaggi, vengono spalancate perché la leggera brezza avrebbe reso arioso l'ambiente rimasto rinserrato nei giorni precedenti.
Si propone di ricevere la coppia con animo gentile com'era solita fare con tutti e ne informa la figlia.
La cosa, comunque la infastidisce, pensando che quel pomeriggio non sarebbe stato uno dei migliori.

Si sarebbero sicuramente rievocati ricordi dolorosi, non ancora lontani e non facili da rimuovere mentre avrebbe preferito uscire di casa, passeggiare per le ampie campagne del luogo, assaporare a pieni polmoni il respiro dell'aria, riempire i suoi occhi di quella luce soffusa, propriamente autunnale, che impregna gli spazi coltivati nelle vicinanze del paese.
Vagando per le campagne sarebbe giunto alle sue narici quell'odore particolare di terra e di frasche che emana dalle cerrete, e dove abbonda per qualità e quantità ogni sorta di funghi che lei e suo marito prediligevano assaporare.
Ma altri doveri incombono come quello di preparare qualcosa da mettere sotto i denti anche se nessuna delle due donne, sebbene digiune, ne abbia voglia.Il pranzo si svolge all'insegna della più totale svogliatezza: pochi i bocconi, mandati giù di corsa, senza essere gustati ma solo per potere affermare, alla fine, di avere assolto ad un obbligo.
La collaboratrice domestica, intanto, fa capolino dalla stanza da pranzo dicendo di essere pronta a rigovernare.
Si ha l'impressione di avere davanti agli occhi una grossa macchia di colore aragosta: è il vestito color carota che avvolge il suo busto svelto e pieno di energia. I suoi capelli a caschetto hanno una tinta castana, striati qua e là da ciuffi giallastri, sbiaditi forse dall'aria.
Ad ogni passo fanno bella mostra di sè e fuoriescono dalle ciabatte grossi talloni screpolati e biancastri.
Il suo viso, di un colorito bruno, evidenzia occhi espressivi ma molto vicini al setto nasale.
La bocca sottile ma ben collocata è sempre in esercizio e pronta ad abbellire, adeguatamente ogni frottola sentita altrove.

Francesca la mette a conoscenza del fatto che nel tardo pomeriggio sarebbero venuti dei signori a porgere le condoglianze e che si debba dare inizio subito alle pulizie cominciando dalla biblioteca per poi finire nella scala, sporca di pedate di fango e di chizzi di macchie varie, che l'inclemenza del tempo non aveva preservato.
Prosegue, conoscendo il personaggio, invitandola ad eseguire il suo lavoro come aveva sempre fatto, con lo stesso scrupolo, con la stessa perizia.
