Per alcuni giorni, dopo la sentenza, Greta si ferma a casa per riposarsi dalle tensioni. La sua espressione è leggermente cambiata, più distesa. Approfittando di sentirsi quasi bene, esce per fornirsi di qualche quotidiano. Ritorna, subito dopo averlo acquistato insieme allo spumante, perché vuole brindare con la madre per festeggiare il tanto atteso esito del processo.Insieme si spostano in terrazza dove Greta stappa la bottiglia e Francesca versa il biondo liquido in due calici.
A questa operazione presta molta attenzione; la vuole fare sempre lei non gradendo nel calice la formazione della schiuma, ma solo le allegre bollicine.Il vino colora i cristalli di un giallo paglierino, frizzante al naso che ne sente la fragranza. Appena spenta l'effervescenza lo bevono in silenzio e lo sentono ristoratore, gustoso,tonico e freddo a tempo giusto. Anche se è pomeriggio avanzato, l'aria è abbastanza infuocata e quel fresco in gola è assai piacevole, graditissimo. I raggi del sole ancora alto nel cielo, quali barrette di luminoso metallo, si rinfrangono qua e là e dove si posano mandano barbaglii balucinanti di colori non sostenibili allo sguardo. Tutto intorno,nel terrazzo, le piantine di lavanda, di rosmarino, di menta e salvia emanano un intenso, dolce eccitante profumo che Francesca accosta a quello sentito nel giardino di Tony. Rimane in preda alla tristezza perché non sente più nei suoi confronti quel rancore incontenibile che l'aveva accompagnata per tanti anni. A questo punto si chiede se è pronta a perdonarlo e quindi a scordare i patimenti passati in una sofferenza umana senza uguali. Forse Tony non sarebbe voluto uscire dai confini di una normale amicizia??? o che il labirinto della sua ragione non ospitava quelle ali necessarie allo smaltimento della fame dei sensi e alla conseguente sublimazione della propria natura verso il vero rinnovarsi della vita??? Francesca, però, sa per certo che non si sente ancora matura per una risposta positiva ma spera, in futuro, di cambiare opinione e di assolverlo anche nelle sue azioni che non suscitano approvazione. È convinta che ciò può verificarsi se Tony informerà il suo comportamento a promuovere per sé tutte le virtù che rendono capaci gli uomini di percorrere i viali profumati dell'onestà e del rispetto verso i propri simili. Francesca si prepara per tornare a scuola. Nel primo pomeriggio i suoi docenti si incontrano con i genitori degli alunni di tutte le classi intermedie perché vengano informati sull'andamento didattico-disciplinare dei loro figli. Per le ultime classi si ottiene che l'incontro avvenga solo con gli studenti perché ormai maggiorenni. Si svolge ogni due mesi e nelle prime classi è sempre oggetto di polemiche, anche se costruttive, fra docenti, genitori e figli. I risultati, se positivi, producono gioia e orgoglio nelle famiglie; se mediocri delusioni e speranze;se deficitari del tutto, aggressioni verbali, inopportune e diseducative nei confronti degli studenti. Il capo d'istituto funge da "TRAITE-UNION" fra tutti i partecipanti e, spesso,per riequilibrare il tutto, ha molto da lavorare in specie quando i soggetti in questione sono indisponibili all'obiettività e alle regole della buona educazione. Nell'ambito di una situazione in cui è evidente anche il contrasto generazionale, il compito da portare a termine è assai difficoltoso. Gli studenti dell'ultimo anno, artefici in uno con i docenti ad ipotizzare la loro programmazione educativa e didattica dell'anno in corso, sono direttamente interessati che l'incontro avvenga senza la presenza dei genitori, per la maggior parte alieni dai bisogni culturali e professionali dei loro figli.

Francesca is getting ready to go back to school. In the early afternoon, its teachers meet with the parents of the pupils of all intermediate classes to be informed about the educational and disciplinary progress of their children. La scuola, però, si preoccupa di tutto ciò perché è convinta che senza l'aiuto delle famiglie non può perseguire i suoi scopi ed è certa che attraverso gli studenti si possono educare anche le famiglie. Gli scambi con persone e con istituzioni che operano in ambienti differenti, che appartengono a professioni e a mestieri diversi,aiutano a crescere, a superare le difficoltà,a moltiplicare le opportunità per un futuro migliore che faccia trionfare le competenze e l'umanità nei rapporti con gli altri. Fondamentale importanza Francesca attribuisce al dialogo costante con le famiglie perché ritiene di imparare reciprocamente a conoscere gli studenti per poter attivare un insegnamento individualizzato atto a valorizzare le capacità di ognuno, che una volta adulto, debba vivere del proprio lavoro ed essere in grado di godere di diritti e rispettare i doveri. Invita pertanto gli studenti dell'ultimo anno nell'aula magna, come era stato precedentemente stabilito, e dà vita ad un breve dibattito sui rapporti che la scuola deve necessariamente tenere con le famiglie. L'atmosfera rimbomba del brusio delle conversazioni che cessano di colpo quando il capo d'istituto prende la parola e dice: "penso ai vostri genitori perché lo sono anch'io e al fatto che abbiate contestato la loro presenza qui. La scuola non è solo nostra, ma di tutti i cittadini. Mi chiedo e vi chiedo: "perché l'interesse sul buon andamento dei vostri studi non dovrebbe dar loro l'autorità di parlare con i docenti delle varie discipline oggetto del vostro lavoro e del conseguente rendimento?.Molti di voi mi informano che la loro presenza vi rende irrequieti, vi penalizza.La ritenete lesiva della vostra libertà. Se siete convinti di questo, offritemi l'occasione di ascoltarne tutte le motivazioni".In un primo momento gli interpellati si irrigidiscono perché non gradiscono interferenze in tutto ciò che considerano personale, e dunque si profila un silenzio di tomba.Subito dopo, però, qualcuno chiede di essere ascoltato. È Antonio, uno dei capoccioni, che apre il discorso col dire: "non sempre mio padre accetta il giudizio di un "mediocre" formulato da alcuni docenti, e una volta a casa, la mia stanza diventa un campo di battaglia, un rimbombo di terminologie irripetibili. Incolpa mia madre dei miei insuccessi scolastici, accusandola di coprire i miei errori, di difendermi anche quando sa che ho sbagliato.
Non devo permettere che ciò più si verifichi perché ne soffrirei moltissimo".
