Si chiede se dentro si sé si siano esaurite le tensioni o solamente assopite. Non riesce a fare di meglio se non a congratularsi con Greta per lo scongiurato pericolo e perché aveva provveduto a chiamare Agnese per la notte. Il mattino seguente, alle ore otto, il telefono squilla di nuovo: Greta comunica alla madre di aver trascorso una notte tranquilla in compagnia dell'amica e del padre di lei che aveva prudentemente deciso di dormire con loro. Francesca non dice come aveva passato la sua di nottata!!! Era rimasta sveglia per buona parte della notte, continuando a ripetersi quello che era accaduto e come era stato possibile che si fosse verificato. Rivedeva Tony e la figlia circondata dalle villose enormi braccia di quell'omaccione e la forza disperata di lei che lo respingeva per liberarsene. Si chiedeva anche quale misteriosa ragione avesse spinto ad innamorarsi di Greta, un uomo sposato ad una moglie bella e rispettosa, di ogni suo capriccio. Tutta la notte è preda di un'agitazione febbrile e il giorno dopo si ritrova fiacca e intontita come se avesse partecipato a delle orge serali. All'alba è in piedi e si prepara a partire mentre si lambicca il cervello alla ricerca di qualcosa che possa dare una svolta definitiva alla situazione. Un'ora dopo è a casa e riabbraccia la figlia che, più ostinata che mai a non permettere a nessuno di rovinarle la vita, si appresta a recarsi al commissariato. Greta è piena di uno spirito combattivo inusitato, senza precedenti, anche se il suo pensiero è rivolto a Beba che, forse, senza colpa alcuna, si troverà a dover testimoniare davanti al magistrato. Anche il suo passato sarebbe venuto alla luce. La sua commovente dedizione di moglie aveva qualcosa di irreale, di medioevale. Il suo non era un matrimonio ma un baratto di prestazioni, atto a dimostrare all'esterno che, nel suo vissuto c'era l'aria del buon consenso. Rivolta alla madre Greta dice: "non mi lascerò trasportare da considerazione alcuna; non posso simulare un'indulgenza che non sento e che ritengo Beba non meriti.
