Si sentiva confortata dalla presenza degli altri che erano con lei ma avrebbe voluto disperatamente essere arrivata. Con una forza di volontà particolare si riportava all'uomo che stava trasportando, che soffriva più di lei, anche se di un male diverso. Si chiedeva perché si sentiva così abbattuta dal momento che era sempre felice di venire in aiuto di chi avesse bisogno. Avrebbe comunque voluto trovarsi altrove per stemperare quella tensione che ostacolava i suoi movimenti, i suoi pensieri. Finalmente giungeva in ospedale e non ripartiva subito: aveva bisogno di sentirsi meglio, di tonificarsi. Al ritorno l'inseguimento riprendeva silenzioso e costante, facendola sentire impotente, costernata. Si chiedeva come fare per modificare quella situazione perché il comportamento di Tony la soffocava, le avvelenava la vita mentre lei doveva sentirsi libera, felice. Pensava di fermarsi e di affrontarlo li, dove si trovava, davanti a tutti. Ma subito rinunciava all'impresa perché non scevra da pericoli. Ora dice alla madre di sentire brividi di febbre e, di non essere stata mai nella sua vita così indisposta e disperata. Francesca cerca di apparire serena. La vita di tutti i giorni le ha insegnato di temporeggiare, di affrontare con calma ogni contrattempo. La figlia è molto simile a lei:forte, determinata, conseguenziale in ogni sua azione. Quando insieme discutono, la loro conversazione, anche se a volte molto vivace, è su cose reali e si ricompone sempre al meglio, con soluzioni equilibrate e valide. L'indomani Greta riparte e,poco dopo, si presenta il fattorino con le solite rose rosse. Sono sempre assai numerose e anonime. Francesca non vuole averle in casa e dietro consistente mancia incarica il latore di trasferirle al cimitero del paese e distribuirle sulle tombe sprovviste di quei confortevoli segni di attenzione. Poi si reca da Irene e la prega di intervenire in sua vece presso Beba per chiederle di invitare il marito a porre fine al suo interessamento nei confronti di Greta e di informarla che il rifiuto dei valori morali che esplode in ogni suo gesto, la sua incapacità di essere onesto e rispettoso, cancellano senza appello quegli iniziali, ma non del tutto rinsaldati, rapporti di amicizia che si erano malauguratamente instaurati tra loro. Infine di ricordargli che le due donne avevano il vivo desiderio di non incontrarli mai più. Bisognava far capire che l'incanto dei rapporti era sparito, che a Francesca e a sua figlia pesava enormemente la concentrazione di quell'amicizia fasulla di cui si erano circondate e che tanto superficialmente avevano di buon animo accettato.

Con una forza di volontà particolare si riportava avano di riuscire con ogni sforzo a prendere le distanze dalla coppia, per riappropriarsi di quella imperturbabile serenità cui ha diritto ogni essere umano che vuole essere solo spettatore di certi colpi bassi che la vita inferte. Irene è contenta di venire incontro alla sua amica e affronta Beba che, sinceramente addolorata, cosi' sembrava, esclama: "mio marito ha sempre avuto un debole per le belle donne e da sempre ha cercato, spasmodicamente, di infastidirle, di insediarle, pur di raggiungere il suo scopo. Ha trovato donne facili ed è riuscito sempre a conquistarle". Greta, però, è un altro tipo di donna, risponde Irene, "L'approccio con lei non si verificherà mai, quella di suo marito è una sconfitta annunciata". E Beba: "mio marito non è facile da convincere, non ascolta nessuno, smetterà solo quando avrà fatto la sua conquista". Beba, come se avesse le facoltà del suo corpo spente, ora ha le lacrime agli occhi e si rammarica del fatto che si è resa possibile la perdita di una buona amicizia, dell'inutilità di intervenire presso di lui per scoraggiarlo, perché è un testone volgare e spregiudicato. L'insuccesso del colloquio ambiguo e contrastante in tutto il suo svolgimento con Beba ha indisposto Irene che, piena di livore, si rivolge a lei con un sorriso agro dolce che non fa presagire nulle di buono e le chiede come mai si ostina a stare con lui; avrebbe dovuto preferire qualsiasi lavoro, anche il più umile e non subire tanti maltrattamenti.

Ma Beba si sente ormai vecchia e non in grado di accettare cambiamenti nel suo vivere quotidiano. Dal giorno del colloquio con Beba il telefono non ha tregua: dalla mattina a notte avanzata i trilli si susseguono e alla risposta di "pronto" segue il silenzio e poi il clic del riattacco. A volte si nota dall'altra parte del filo un ansimare ritmico e beffardo: a volte il silenzio più assoluto. È come se qualcuno volesse sentire una voce alla quale, però, non vuole dare risposta. Il telefono diventa il nemico numero uno, un essere strano che incute paura e, pur restando silenzioso nelle risposte,trasmette fantomatici oscuri presagi di tragici eventi, di inconfessabili minacce. Venuta a conoscenza dell'esito negativo del colloquio, Francesca decide di far finta di niente di ignorare la coppia e in qualsiasi circostanza negare il saluto. Per quanto riguarda gli squilli del telefono, mentre prima si concedeva qualche vituperio colorito all'indirizzo del seccatore, ora preferisce soprassedere e rispondere al silenzio col silenzio. Intanto sorge un altro giorno e decide di dedicarsi solo al suo lavoro. Deve espletare con una commissione di due docenti e il segretario un concorso a cattedra dove molti mesi prima era stata nominata come presidente. Sarebbe stata impegnata per completare il tutto e avrebbe scordato quanto fosse successo, sempre che l'allontanamento dalla coppia avesse scongiurato il pericolo.
