Chinese craze for English tattoos

For quite a while people in the West have been copying each other and getting tattoos of Chinese characters done, but now tattoo parlours in China are reporting lots of people suddenly getting themselves tattooed with English letters.

Zhang Aiping, a tattooist from Shanghai, said, ’Around thirty to forty per cent of our customers are having tattoos done in English now. This has happened really suddenly, since the beginning of this year.’

The reason for choosing English letters is simple a tattoo in a foreign language is something which is seen as exciting, mysterious and exotic. Yang Enna, a twenty-two-year-old television producer in Shanghai, said, ’English tattoos are just more special. If I had a tattoo done in Chinese, everyone would immediately know what it meant.’

The Chinese clients are often inspired by footballers such as David Beckham who have tattoos in various languages.

However, there are many dangers in having a tattoo -especially in another language. For example, singer Justin Timberlake had the Chinese symbol for ’song’ tattooed on his left leg, but he probably didn’t realise that it meant ’wrong’ too! The American basketball player Marcus Camby has two enormous Chinese Characters tattooed on his arm which have no real meaning at all.

This then leads us to the question ’Are tattoos a great idea at all?’ Not if you’re 18-year-old Kimberley Vlaminck from Belgium, whose father was furious when she came home with 56 star tattoos on her face! Kimberley at first lied and said that the tattooist had misunderstood, and she tried to sue him to pay to have them removed. She later admitted the truth.

Perhaps it’s a good plan to think twice and to ask your friends for advice before you have a tattoo done.

Per un po 'la gente in Occidente si è copiata tra di loro e ha ottenuto tatuaggi di caratteri cinesi, ma ora tra i cinesi è improvvisamente scattata lambda di tatuarsi con lettere inglesi.

Se avessi fatto un tatuaggio in cinese, tutti saprebbero immediatamente cosa significasse ».

I clienti cinesi sono spesso ispirati da calciatori come David Beckham che hanno tatuaggi in varie lingue.

Beckham ha scelto un tatuaggio di un proverbio cinese per lui quando era in viaggio a Hong Kong.

Tuttavia, ci sono molti pericoli per avere un tatuaggio - specialmente in un'altra lingua. Ad esempio, il cantante Justin Timberlake aveva il simbolo cinese della "canzone" tatuata sulla gamba sinistra, ma probabilmente non si rese conto che significava anche "sbagliato"!
Il giocatore di basket americano Marcus Camby ha due enormi personaggi cinesi tatuati sul braccio che non hanno alcun significato reale.

Ciò poi ci porta alla domanda "I tatuaggi sono una buona idea?
'Non se tu sei il 18enne Kimberley Vlaminck dal Belgio, il cui padre era furioso quando tornò a casa con tatuaggi a 56 stelle sul suo viso!
Kimberley dapprima ha mentito e ha detto che il tatuatore aveva frainteso, e lei ha cercato di fargli causa per farli rimuovere.
Poi ha ammesso la verità.

Forse è un buona idea quella di pensare due volte e di chiedere ai tuoi amici consigli prima di fare un tatuaggio.
