Prefazione

I Pendragon nascono nel 1978 e appartengono al filone del Neo Progressive Britannico assieme a Pallas , IQ , Marillion , Arena , il disco che andiamo a recensire oggi è il loro quinto lavoro , prodotto nel 1996 dal titolo The Masquerade Overture che a detta di molti è anche il loro miglior lavoro , viene inserito tra i capolavori del Neo-Progressive , comunque non sono da sottovalutare anche i precedenti The Windows of life e The World dove si può già apprezzare la personalità stilistica della band.

Recensione

The Masquerade Overture primo brano del disco che ci fa già assaporare quanto le tastiere siano il punto focale del gruppo , qui Nolan ci fornisce un assaggio di quello che poi seguirà nell’ascolto dell’intero lavoro.
Con As Good As Gold il livello sale , si respirano richiami Crimsoniani e la parte di chitarra di Barrett è davvero di ottimo spessore , bellissima la parte finale dove Clive destreggia al piano riconducendoci ai fasti di Emerson e Wakeman mostri sacri delle tastiere.
Il seguente Paintbox è un brano prevalentemente acustico dove il suono ci ricorda un altro grande gruppo del panorama rock , i Pink Floyd.
The Pursuit Of Excellence presenta una parte sinfonica degna di nota , molti gruppi di questo genere inseriscono delle parti sinfoniche e strutturalmente questo è ben riuscito anche ai Pendragon.
I 12 e passa minuti di Guardian of My Soul fanno alzare di nuovo il livello compositivo , degno de miglior pro in questo brano possiamo gustare un ottima fusione tra i vari membri della band , tastiere , chitarre , un brano dove emerge la voce di Barrett.
The Shadov è sicuramente il pezzo che serve dopo aver ascoltato l’energica Guardian of My Soul , tutto ritorna alla tranquillità , al romanticismo barocco dei migliori EL&P alla dolcezza delle dita di Wakeman e dei suoi Yes.
Ma l’apoteosi musicale arriva in chiusura con l’ultimo pezzo Master Of Illusion , qui il tecnicismo mostrato e la fantasia artistica portano aria nuova nel mondo del prog ma non mancano i riconoscimenti a mostri sacri come Genesis e King Crimson oltre all’influenza delle tastiere del compianto Wright del Pink Floyd , sicuramente il miglior pezzo dell’intero album dove ascoltandolo chiunque è appassionato delProgressive tira un sospiro di sollievo sentendosi soddisfatto di amare questo genere e brani come Master Of Illusion.

Conclusioni

Un disco che sicuramente consiglio , da buon conoscitore di questo genere non posso che inserire i Pendragon e nello specifico questo lavoro tra i dischi migliori del rock rock-progressive o come viene definito a partire dagli anni 80 Neo Progressive.

Review

The Masquerade Overture first track of the disc makes us already taste how much the keyboards are the focal point of the group, here Nolan gives us a taste of what will then follow in listening to the whole work.
With As Good As Gold the level goes up, you can hear recalls Crimsonians and the guitar part of Barrett is really very good, the final part is beautiful where Clive juggles the piano bringing us back to the glories of Emerson and Wakeman sacred keyboard monsters.
The following Paintbox is a predominantly acoustic piece where the sound reminds us of another great rock band, Pink Floyd.
The Pursuit Of Excellence presents a noteworthy symphonic part, many groups of this kind insert symphonic parts and structurally this is also successful to Pendragon.
The 12 and minutes of Guardian of My Soul raise the compositional level again, worthy of the best prog in this song we can enjoy a good fusion between the various members of the band, keyboards, guitars, a passage where the Barrett voice emerges.
The Shadov is definitely the piece you need after listening to the energetic Guardian of My Soul, everything returns to tranquility, to the baroque romanticism of the best EL&P to the sweetness of Wakeman fingers and his Yes.
But the musical apotheosis comes to a close with the last piece Master Of Illusion, here the technicality shown and the artistic fantasy bring a new air into the world of prog but there is no shortage of recognitions to sacred monsters like Genesis and King Crimson in addition to the influence of the Wright keyboards of Pink Floyd, certainly the best piece of the album where anyone who is passionate about Progressive is breathing a sigh of relief feeling satisfied with loving this genre and excerpts like Master Of Illusion.

Conclusions

A record that I definitely recommend, as a connoisseur of this kind I can only insert the Pendragon and specifically this work among the best records of rock-progressive rock or as defined from the 80s Neo Progressive.
