IN THE PAINT ep.1 – SAN ANTONIO SPURS 2013-14

INTRODUCTION
(ENG) “IN THE PAINT” is a rubrica that I would like to propose you weekly and where I would like to talk about NBA and European basketball. “The paint” is the place under the basket where all the positive and negative things happen during a game. If a team dominates this piece of court, it will probably win the game: rebounds, blocks, turnovers, assists, easy baskets and dirty plays. Some players have created their basketball fortune in the paint and I hope to build mine here too. Have a good read.
(ITA) “IN THE PAINT” è una rubrica che vorrei proporre settimanalmente e dove vorrei parlare di NBA e basket europeo. Letteralmente “in the paint” significa “nel pitturato” ovvero dentro l’area sotto il canestro. In quest’area del campo è dove si vincono e si perdono le partite: rimbalzi, stoppate, palle perse, assist, canestri facili e gioco sporco. Alcuni giocatori hanno fatto la loro fortuna in questa zona del campo ed anche io spero di trovare successo in questo spazio. Buona lettura.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS ('13-'14)

(ENG) I want to dedicate my first episode to a roster that I usually describe like ”THE TEAM”; the reason of this nickname is easy to understand: apparently they were a team like others in NBA history, but they had something of different: there were great talented players in that team, but what made them unique was their ability to have a overall game. Every player in each role was member of the whole mosaic and it did not matter if someone played just some minutes, because during that piece of time he was able to give his help to win the game. So in my opinion they were the symbol of the “TEAM” in the NBA.

During that season the staff had the capacity to emphasize the skills of all the players in the roster, but the head coach Greg Popovich was (and he is still now) the representation of the leader in a team, because he is authoritative and authoritarian, but at the same time he knows basketball really well. He was able to motivate all the players of that team during that season and to underline the skills of each of them. Spurs started the season with an NBA-record ten international players: no team before them had tried something of similar, because the ocean between US basketball and all the others was really big. Popovich tried this option to mix different styles: Marco Belinelli (ITA) (the first and the unique Italian player to win NBA Championship and 3-points contest at the All-Star Game), Boris Diaw (FRA) (an expert power forward with good hands and great game vision), Thiago Splitter (BRA) (a fast center), Patty Mills (AUS) and Cory Joseph (CAN) are the names of the followers but we could write lines and lines about them.
The heart of the Internationals was represented by two players: Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were the greatest international players that season: the first one was a French fast point guard with good hands and fundamentals and the second one was an Argentinian player that seemed a common person, but instead he was talented and smart.
I think that there were two great All-Star in this team: Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard. I have to be honest with you: these two players are my favourite players. They were the touch point between the past and the future in this franchise, even if they played in two different roles. Both of them were complete and had good skills on all the corners of the field. The common feature was their ability to demonstrate everything on the court and be silent outside: they were always concentrate to do the best play.
The previous season San Antonio had lost in the Finals at game 7 against Miami Heat. They were only a few centimetres from the title, but an offensive rebound and a Ray Allen’s three changed the history in game 6 and the last game. So Spurs started the 2013-2014 season with some bitter in their mouths. They finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA (62-20). During the post season they had their revenge: they won Conference Quarterfinals against Nowitzki’s Dallas Mavericks (4-3), then against Portland (4-1). In Conference Finals San Antonio found a young talented team: the Oklahoma City Thunder of Westbrook and Durant, but basketball experience brought the Spurs to the Conference title.

Popovich & Co. found again Miami in the Finals. James and Wade would like to win in a back to back, but Spurs won in just 5 games, even if they lost the second game at AT&T Centre in San Antonio. Leonard was named Finals MVP and he became the new leader of the franchise after Tim Duncan (something like TD in 2003 after David Robinson).

(ITA) Vorrei dedicare il mio primo episodio alla formazione che solitamente descrivo come ”THE TEAM”; la ragione per questo soprannome è facile da capire: apparentemente potevano apparire come qualsiasi altra squadra, ma in realtà avevano un qualcosa che li differenziava. C’erano giocatori di grande talento in quella formazione, ma ciò che li rese unici fu la loro capacità di avere un gioco corale. Ogni giocatore per ogni ruolo era un pezzo dell’intero mosaico e non importava quanto tempo giocasse, purché durante quei ritagli di minuti in campo fosse capace di contribuire per la vittoria della partita. Credo quindi che questa squadra sia stata il simbolo del “TEAM” nella NBA per alcuni anni.
Durante quella stagione lo staff ebbe la capacità di enfatizzare le abilità di ogni giocatore nel roster ed in particolar modo il capo allenatore Greg Popovich, il quale fu (ed è ancora oggi) la rappresentazione del leader in una formazione: è una persona autorevole ed al contempo autoritaria ed ha una grande conoscenza della pallacanestro. Riuscì a motivare ed a sottolineare le caratteristiche di ogni giocatore in quell’annata. Gli Spurs iniziarono la stagione con 10 giocatori non statunitensi: questo fu un record nella NBA, perché nessuna squadra aveva mai osato affidarsi a così tanti giocatori non nati negli USA. Popovic provò questa soluzione per mischiare stili di gioco diversi: Marco Belinelli (ITA) (primo giocatore italiano a vincere un titolo NBA e la gara del tiro da 3 punti durante l’All-Star Week-end), Boris Diaw (FRA) (ala grande esperta dalle mani delicate e con un’ottima visione di gioco), Thiago Splitter (BRA) (centro dai piedi veloci), Patty Mills (AUS) e Cory Joseph (CAN) furono i nomi dei gregari, ma potremmo scrivere righe e righe su di loro. Il fulcro degli internazionali fu rappresentato da 4 giocatori: Tony Parker e Manu Ginobili furono i giocatori internazionali con maggiore talento e più simbolici: il primo era un playmaker francese molto veloce con buone mani e fondamentali ed il secondo una guardia argentina, all’apparenza un giocatore comune, ma con un ottimo talento e una grande intelligenza.

Le due grandi star della squadra erano Tim Duncan e Kawhi Leonard. Devo essere onesto con voi: questi due giocatori sono i miei favoriti di sempre nella NBA. Loro furono il punto di contatto tra il passato ed il futuro in questa franchigia, pur giocando in due ruoli diversi. Entrambi furono completi ed avevano buone capacità in tutti gli angoli del campo. La caratteristica che li accomunava era la loro abilità nel dimostrare tutto in campo ed essere silenziosi al di fuori: erano sempre concentrati per fare la miglior giocata.
La stagione precedente San Antonio aveva perso alle finali in gara 7 contro i Miami Heat. Erano arrivati a pochi centimetri da vincere il titolo, ma un rimbalzo offensivo ed una tripla di Ray Allen cambiarono la storia in gara 6 ed infine anche in gara 7. Così gli Spurs iniziarono la stagione 13-14 con un po’ di amaro in bocca. Finirono la stagione regolare con il miglior record della lega (62-20). Durante i playoff ebbero la loro vendetta: vinsero i quarti di conference contro i Dallas Mavericks di Nowitzki (4-3) e dopo le semifinali contro i Portland Trail Blazers (4-1). Alle finali di conference incrociarono i giovani e talentuosi Oklahoma City Thunder di Westbrook e Durant, ma la maggiore esperienza portò gli Spurs al titolo di conference.
San Antonio trovò nuovamente Miami in finale. James e Wade avrebbero voluto ripetersi, ma gli Spurs vinsero la serie su 5 gare, pur avendo perso la seconda partita all’ AT&T Centre di San Antonio. Leonard fu nominato MVP delle Finals ed ereditò così lo scettro di leader della franchigia da Tim Duncan, che si ritirerà alla fine della stagione successiva (un po’ come lo stesso TD fece nel 2003 con David Robinson).
