Buonasera amici sportivi,
si entra nel vivo di questi mondiali! Ecco la mia analisi degli ottavi di finale di ieri: Spagna-Russia giocata alle 16 e Croazia-Danimarca giocata alle 20.

Quella di ieri è stata una giornata segnata dai calci di rigore: infatti entrambi gli incontri sono terminati sul 1-1 dopo i tempi regolamentari e sono proseguiti fino ai penalty. Ma chi l'avrà spuntata dalla lotteria dei rigori? Scopriamolo insieme nel prossimo paragrafo, buona lettura!

120 minuti di sofferenza, 1-1 nei primi 90 minuti e 0-0 nei 30 minuti supplementari: alla fine però, dopo tanta fatica, la spuntano i padroni di casa russi che grazie al loro portierone Akinfeev mandano a casa le Furie Rosse.
I primi e gli unici 2 gol della partita arrivano entrambi nella prima frazione ed entrambi su calcio piazzato. Il primo, quello degli spagnoli, arriva al 12' ed è un'autorete del difensore Ignaschevich sugli sviluppi di una punizione calciata da Asensio. Il secondo, il pareggio dei russi, lo mette a segno l'attaccante Dzyuba su calcio di rigore assegnato per fallo (ingenuo) di Piquè poco prima dell'intervallo.

Non è un caso che le reti siano scaturite da calci da fermo: entrambe le formazioni non sono riuscite a sfondare le difese avversarie e per questo abbiamo assistito ad una partita bloccata, con un gioco lento, tanti passaggi e poche emozioni.
Meriti soprattutto dei padroni di casa che serrando le linee e chiudendosi nella propria metà campo hanno impedito agli ospiti di esprimere il loro tipico tiki-taka, limitandoli ad aperture orizzontali. Nemmeno la stanchezza ha permesso di aprire gli spazi e rompere schemi e tattiche, anche durante i tempi supplementari non ci sono stati colpi di scena.
Poi ai calci di rigore si è messo in mostra Akinfeev volando 2 volte su Koke e Aspas (qui addirittura respinge con i piedi) e regalando ai suoi la prima storica qualificazione agli ottavi post Unione Sovietica.

Fuori anche la Spagna di Hierro dunque, in un mondiale sempre più ricco di sorprese. Quella dei calci di rigore è una mezza maledizione per gli spagnoli: già nel 1986 contro il Belgio e nel 2002 contro la Corea (sì, la stessa Corea che buttò fuori anche noi) gli era andata male. Il passaggio del turno non sarebbe comunque stato pienamente meritato vista la opaca prestazione.

Qualificazione invece abbastanza meritata per i ragazzi di Cherchesov, che con carattere e spirito di sacrificio hanno saputo resistere 120 minuti alla furia spagnola e infine con lucidità e freddezza sui calci di rigore hanno portato a casa la vittoria. Come già detto è la prima volta ai quarti di un mondiale da quando è stata disciolta l'Unione Sovietica; segno di una crescita sportiva costante che si è avuta in questi anni e del duro lavoro svolto in fase di preparazione pre-mondiale da mister Cherchesov.

Una deludente Croazia passa il turno con la Danimarca grazie alle parate del suo portiere Subasic ai calci di rigore, dopo l'1-1 dei 120 minuti.
La partita è iniziata nel miglior modo possibile: dopo 4 minuti il risultato era già 1-1.
La prima rete arriva dopo una manciata di secondi con un mancino di Jorgensen servito da una rimessa laterale lunga di Knudsen che porta in vantaggio i vichinghi. Nemmeno il tempo di esultare che la Croazia trova subito il pari: Mandzukic approfitta di un rimpallo dopo un affondo di Vrsalijko per insaccare la porta.
Dopodiché il nulla, la partita si spegne, calano i ritmi e la noia regna sugli spalti. La Croazia, tecnicamente di gran lunga superiore agli avversari soprattutto a centrocampo, dovrebbe farla da padrona ma i balcanici sono stranamente lenti e prevedibili e non riescono a costruire gioco. I danesi, invece, sono ben posizionati in campo e la difesa resta solida e compatta per tutta la partita impedendo agli attaccanti croati di rendersi pericolosi.

Manca intensità e ritmo di gioco, la situazione non cambia nemmeno nella ripresa e nei tempi supplementari. Tra i danesi si mette in mostra Poulsen che impegna più volte Subasic, mentre tra i croati l'occasione più ghiotta la spreca Modric al 117', calciando malamente un penalty che avrebbero potuto chiudere i conti.
Si va così ai calci di rigore: tanti gli errori, 2 per la Croazia e 3 per la Danimarca, ma è anche merito di Subasic e del figlio d'arte Schmeichel autori di pregevoli parate. Tuttavia è decisiva la trasformazione di Rakitic che fa impazzire di gioia i tifosi e consente ai suoi di passare il turno.

Ha rischiato caro la Croazia di Dalic, in una partita che avrebbe dovuto dominare sulla carta. Evidentemente i suoi ragazzi sono stati condizionati dalla pressione e dalla tensione. Ora devono ringraziare Subasic che con le sue parate ha evitato il peggio e mettersi al lavoro per preparare la prossima sfida contro i padroni di casa della Russia. Non sarà facile giocare un quarto di finale da ospiti, restano tuttavia i favoriti; stavolta la concentrazione dovrà essere massima.

Tornano a casa con il magone i ragazzi guidati da mister Hareide, a cui vanno fatti comunque i complimenti per la grinta e la determinazione mostrati nel rettangolo di gioco. Uscire ai calci di rigore lascia sempre un senso di amarezza e rammarico, perché sai che bastava una briciola per potercela fare. Resta tuttavia la soddisfazione per essere giunti agli ottavi di finale, un traguardo raggiunto in passato soltanto tre volte e che mancava da 16 anni.

E così sabato 7 luglio a Soci sarà Russia - Croazia il secondo quarto di finale di questo torneo.
La vincente andrà poi a scontrarsi con una tra Svezia, Svizzera, Colombia ed Inghilterra evitando gli spauracchi Francia e Brasile.
Russia - Croazia sarà un quarto di finale un pò insolito per un mondiale: i russi sono alla loro prima volta assoluta tra le prime 8, i croati sono andati oltre i quarti solo una volta nella loro storia nel 1998, quando conquistarono il terzo posto.
Sarò curioso scoprire chi delle due la spunterà, in una sfida difficile da decifrare: la Croazia è superiore dal punto di vista tecnico e quindi favorita, ma la poca esperienza in campo internazionale ed il fattore casa a favore dei russi rendono il match (almeno sulla carta) equilibrato.

Here's my analysis of yesterday's games: Spain-Russia played at 4 p.m. and Croatia-Denmark played at 8 p.m.

Yesterday was a day marked by penalty kicks: in fact, both matches ended 1-1 after the regulatory time and continued until the penalty. But who will win it from the penalty lottery? Let's discover it together in the next paragraph, wish you a good reading!

Spain - Russia 1-1 (3-4 after penalties)

120 minutes of agony, 1-1 in the first 90 minutes and 0-0 in the additional 30 minutes: in the end, however, after so much effort, the Russian hosts won the game, thanks to their goalkeeper Akinfeev, sending the Red Furies home. The first and only 2 goals of the match both arrived in the first fraction and both on a free kick. The first, the one of the Spaniards', arrived at the 12 minute and is an own goal of the defender Ignaschevich on the developments of a free kick kicked by Asensio. The second, the draw of the Russians is scored by the striker Dzyuba on a penalty awarded for a (naive)foul by Piquè just before the interval.

It's no coincidence that the goals came from free kicks: both teams were unable to break through the opposing defenses and for this reason, we saw a game blocked, with a slow game, many passages, and few emotions. Mostly thanks to the hosts which, by tightening the lines and closing in their own half of the field, have prevented the guests from expressing their typical tiki-taka, limiting them to horizontal openings. Not even tiredness allowed to open spaces and break patterns and tactics, even during the extra time there were no surprises. Then at penalty kicks, Akinfeev showed off by flying twice on Koke and Aspas (here he even rejects with his feet) and giving his team the first historic qualification for the quarter-finals post-Soviet Union.

The Spain of Hierro is also out, therefore, in a World Cup more and more full of surprises. The penalty kicks is a half curse for the Spaniards: already in 1986 against Belgium and in 2002 against Korea (yes, the same Korea that also eliminated Italy) had gone wrong. The passage of the round would not have been fully deserved, however, given the opaque performance.

Qualification, on the other hand, is well deserved for the boys of Cherchesov, who with character and spirit of sacrifice have been able to resist 120 minutes to the Spanish fury and finally with lucidity and coldness on penalty kicks have brought home the victory. As already said, it is the first time they made it to the quarterfinals in a world championship since the Soviet Union was dissolved; a sign of a constant growth in sports that has taken place in recent years and of the hard work done by coach Cherchesov in the pre-World Championship preparation phase.

Croatia - Denmark 1-1 (3-2 after penalties)

A disappointing Croatia passes the turn with Denmark thanks to the saves of his goalkeeper Subasic at penalty kicks, after the 1-1 of the 120 minutes.

The game started in the best possible way: after 4 minutes the result was already 1-1.

The first goal comes after a matter of seconds with a left shot by Jorgensen served by a long lineout by Knudsen that brings the Vikings ahead. Not even the time to rejoice that Croatia immediately finds its equal: Mandzukic takes advantage of a rebound after a shot by Vrsalijko to score his goal.

After that, the game goes out, the rhythms drop and boredom reigns in the stands. Croatia, technically far superior to its opponents especially in midfield, should be the master, but the Balkans are strangely slow and predictable and can not build the game. The Danes, however, are well positioned on the field and the defense remains solid and compact throughout the match preventing the Croatian strikers to make themselves dangerous.

There was a lack of intensity and rhythm of play, the situation did not change even in the recovery and extra time. Among the Danes Poulsen is on a show as he engages Subasic several times, while among the Croats the most greedy occasion is Modric's waste in the 117th minute, badly kicking a penalty that could have closed the game.

This is how we reach the penalty kicks: many mistakes, 2 for Croatia and 3 for Denmark, but it is also thanks to Subasic and his artistic son Schmeichel, authors of valuable saves. However, Rakitic's transformation is decisive as he drives fans crazy and allows them to pass the turn.

Dalic's Croatia risked a lot in a match that technically should have dominated. Obviously, his boys have been conditioned by pressure and tension. Now they have to thank Subasic that with his parades he avoided the worst and get to work to prepare for the next challenge against the hosts of Russia. It won't be easy to play a quarter-final as guests, but they are still the favorites; this time the concentration will have to be maximum.

The guys led by coach Hareide return home with nothing, but they must be congratulated for the determination shown on the field. Going out at penalty kicks always leaves a sense of bitterness and regret, because you know that a crumb would have been enough to be able to do it. However, they are still satisfied that they have reached the round of 16, a goal that they have only achieved three times in the past and that they have been missing for 16 years.
