eccoci finalmente alla fase eliminatoria di questa edizione 2018 del campionato mondiale di calcio.
Adesso il torneo si fa più avvincente e ce ne siamo resi conto già osservando i 2 emozionanti match di ieri: Francia-Argentina e Uruguay-Portogallo.

Sorprendenti gli esiti delle 2 partite, a conferma del fatto che questo mondiale ha qualcosa di unico e ci sta riserbando colpi di scena uno dietro l'altro. Andiamo ora ad analizzare gli incontri di ieri nel seguente paragrafo, buona lettura!

Francia - Argentina 4-3

Festa del gol al Kazan Arena: nel primo ottavo di finale la Francia batte l'Argentina 4-3 dopo una partita spumeggiante.

La formazione di Sampaoli comincia la partita con entusiasmo e sembra avere la giusta determinazione, ma ben presto la sicurezza degli argentini crolla sotto i colpi dei transalpini. I primi a rendersi davvero pericolosi sono infatti proprio i francesi con Griezmann che colpisce l'incrocio dei pali su punizione. Questo è solo un assaggio del gol che arriva poco dopo sempre ad opera sua, stavolta però il pallone lo calcia dagli 11 metri. Bravo nell'occasione Mbappè che costringe l'avversario al fallo in area dopo una veloce ripartenza.
I francesi continuano a spingere e sfiorano il raddoppio, tuttavia i sudamericani riescono a pareggiare i conti prima di andare all'intervallo grazie ad una bomba di Di Maria dai 35 metri. L'1-1 parziale è immeritato, l'Albiceleste è stata dominata dagli avversari e non è mai riuscita ad affacciarsi dalle parti di Lloris.

Ad inizio ripresa gli argentini passano clamorosamente in vantaggio con una fortunosa deviazione di Mercado su una conclusione di Messi che permette alla palla di entrare in rete. Nemmeno il tempo di esultare che Pavard, con un tiro di esterno destro, ristabilisce la parità. Da qui in poi si scatena la Francia, ma soprattutto si scatena Mbappè. Il gioiellino classe '98 segna la sua prima doppietta personale in un mondiale, mettendo a ferro e fuoco la difesa avversaria e portando i suoi sul risultato di 4-2. Nel finale Aguero accorcia le distanze con un colpo di testa, ma è ormai troppo tardi: finisce 4-3.

Grande prova di forza degli uomini di Deschamps, capaci di eliminare Messi e compagni rifilando ben 4 reti. Gran parte del merito va a Mbappè: questo ragazzino ad appena 20 anni ha trascinato i suoi ai quarti di finale e ha impressionato tutto il mondo con le sue giocate. Forse ora c'è da mettere a punto la difesa, non proprio perfetta contro l'Argentina, ma si tratta di dettagli: ci sono a tutti gli effetti delle solide basi per poter vincere questo mondiale.

Non c'è l'ha fatta Messi a portare la sua gente sul tetto del mondo: a 31 anni compiuti questa era forse la sua ultima chance di vincere un mondiale. D'altronde già dalla partita inaugurale contro l'Islanda si erano avvertiti i primi segnali negativi, la squadra di Sampaoli non aveva convinto e non ha convinto nemmeno nelle partite successive. La compattezza dei francesi e la tecnica di Mbappè hanno messo a dura prova la difesa albiceleste che non ha retto all'impeto ed è crollata. Ora è tempo di cucire le ferite e ripartire per gli argentini, molto probabilmente senza il loro amato Leo.

Uruguay - Portogallo 2-1

Sarà l'Uruguay la sfidante della Francia ai quarti di finale: a Sochi la nazionale sudamericana ha battuto il Portogallo con il risultato di 2-1.

La gara si sblocca subito, precisamente dopo soli 7 minuti: Suarez dalla sinistra fa partire un cross perfetto che Cavani intercetta e con un colpo di testa dei suoi infila la rete difesa da Rui Patricio. Per il resto il primo tempo non ha regalato tante emozioni, con i sudamericani che hanno continuato ad attaccare con le due terribili punte ma senza creare particolari problemi all'estremo difensore portoghese. Il Portogallo invece non è entrato proprio in partita, complice anche un Cristiano Ronaldo spento e bloccato dall'ottima difesa avversaria. La prima frazione si chiude così sul 1-0.

Nella ripresa la musica cambia (o almeno sembra così nei primi minuti), i portoghesi sembrano aver giovato della ripresa e sono più energici. Passano 10 minuti ed arriva la rete del 1-1, firmata Pepe, che finalizza di testa un cross di Guerreiro.
Si tratta della prima rete subita dall'Uruguay in questa competizione ed è frutto di una dormita di Godin e Gimenez.
Verrebbe da pensare che a questo punto e con queste circostanze i sudamericani vadano sotto mentalmente e che i portoghesi prendano fiducia e schiaccino gli avversari nella loro metà campo: il calcio però non è una scienza esatta e ciò che succede in campo è sempre imprevedibile. Così dopo appena 7 minuti Bentancur parte a razzo in contropiede e lancia El Matador Cavani che non ci pensa 2 volte ed infila nuovamente Rui Patricio.
Santos butta nella mischia Quaresma e Andrè Silva per tentare il colpo ma il muro degli uruguaiani è impenetrabile ed il risultato resta fermo sul 2-1.

Missione compiuta per Tabarez, la difesa di ferro dei suoi ragazzi sembra essere la vera arma vincente di questa squadra, che ora dovrà vedersela con la Francia ai quarti di finale. La retroguardia uruguaiana sarà dunque messa a dura prova contro gli attacchi e le accelerate di Mbappè e compagni; da valutare la presenza di Cavani, che sembra essersi infortunato in occasione del gol del 2-1. L'eventuale assenza del Matador potrebbe pesare molto per Tabarez, che dovrebbe in quel caso mandare in campo Stuani dal primo minuto o lavorare su un modulo diverso in allenamento (cosa meno probabile).

E dunque dopo Messi fuori anche Ronaldo, sembra che i due si inseguino perennemente.
La squadra di Santos non ha mai dimostrato in questo match di meritare davvero la qualificazione al turno successivo: la dipendenza da capitan CR7 è quasi totale e quando lui non è in giornata, vengono risaltate le pecche di questa formazione e la mancanza di qualità. Già all'esordio contro la Spagna la difesa aveva traballato e i portoghesi avevano dovuto ringraziare il loro fenomeno, altrimenti a quest'ora non avrebbero nemmeno giocato l'ottavo di finale.

Ecco quindi svelato il primo quarto di finale di questo torneo: Francia - Uruguay.
Sarà la sfida personale tra Suarez e Mbappè, i punti di forza delle due nazionali. Ma sarà anche la sfida tra l'attacco scintillante dei transalpini e la difesa di roccia dei sudamericani. Riusciranno a sfondare il muro i francesi o verranno respinti e colpiti in contropiede? Lo scopriremo venerdì alle ore 16.

Non me ne vogliano i cari amici francesi, sarebbero stato bello però assistere ad un duello tutto sudamericano tra Argentina ed Uruguay, Messi contro Suarez, Tabarez contro Sampaoli. Anche perché le europee dominano da sempre la scena dei mondiali: in questa fase eliminatoria ne sono presenti 10 su 16, contro le 5 sudamericane (1 sola asiatica e 0 africane). Mi piacerebbe per una volta assistere ad una finale senza europee o, perché no, a 2 semifinali puramente sudamericane. Ma va bene così, questo è il calcio.

France - Argentina 4-3

A big party of goals at the Kazan Arena: France beats Argentina 4-3 in the first eighth of the final after a bubbly match.

Sampaoli's formation starts the game with enthusiasm and seems to have the right determination, but soon the safety of the Argentines collapses under the blows of the Transalpines. The French continue to push and almost double, but the South Americans manage to balance the scores before going to the pause thanks to a shot from 35 meters by Di Maria. The 1-1 at the halftime is undeserved, the Albiceleste was dominated by its opponents and never managed to come near Lloris.

At the start of the second half, the Argentinians took a sensational lead with a lucky deviation by Mercado on a shot by Messi that allowed the ball to enter the goal. Not even the time to rejoice that Pavard, restores the parity. From here on, France is unleashed, but above all, Mbappè is unleashed. The 98 class jewel scores his first personal one-two in a world cup, putting the opponent's defense to fire and sword and bringing his own team to a 4-2 result. In the final Aguero shortened the distances between the two team with a goal with his head, but it was too late: the game finished 4-3.

On the other hand, from the opening match against Iceland, the first negative signals were already felt, Sampaoli's team had not been very convincing and did not even convince in the following matches. The compactness of the French and the technique of Mbappè put a strain on the Albiceleste defense that did not withstand the pressure and collapsed. Now it's time to sew the wounds and start again for the Argentines, most likely without their beloved Leo.

Uruguay - Portugal 2-1

Uruguay will be France's challenger in the quarter-finals: in Sochi, the South American national team beat Portugal with a result of 2-1.

The game unlocked immediately, precisely after just 7 minutes: Suarez started from the left a perfect cross that Cavani intercepted and with a header of his, slipped the goal defended by Rui Patricio. For the rest, the first half didn't give many emotions, with the South Americans who continued to attack with the two terrible strikers but without creating particular problems for the extreme Portuguese defender. Portugal, on the other hand, didn't get into the game, thanks also to a Cristiano Ronaldo who was switched-off and blocked by an excellent defense. The first fraction of the game ended with a 1-0.

The second half looks like a whole other story (or at least it seems so in the first minutes), the Portuguese seem to have benefited from the recovery and are more energetic. 10 minutes pass and arrives the 1-1 goal, signed Pepe, that scored with his head on a cross from Guerreiro. This is the first goal Uruguay suffered in this competition and is the result of a sleep of Godin and Gimenez.

One would think that at this point and with these circumstances the South Americans will suffer mentally and that the Portuguese take confidence and crush their opponents in their half of the field: but football is not an exact science and what happens on the field is always unpredictable. So after just 7 minutes, Bentancur starts a rocket in a counterattack and launches for El Matador Cavani who doesn't think twice and makes another goal on Rui Patricio's back.

Santos throws Quaresma and Andrè Silva into the fight to try the shot but the wall of Uruguayans is impenetrable and the result remains firm on 2-1.

Mission complete for Tabarez, the iron defense of his boys seems to be the real winning weapon of this team, which will now have to deal with France in the quarter-finals. The Uruguayan rearguard will, therefore, be put to the test against the attacks and accelerations of Mbappè and his team-mates; to be evaluated, the presence of Cavani, who seems to have injured himself on the occasion of the goal of 2-1. The possible absence of El Matador could weigh a lot for Tabarez, who would then have to send Stuani into the field from the first minute or work on a different module in training (which is less likely).

And so after Messi, also Ronaldo is out, it seems that the two are constantly chasing each other. Santos' team has never shown in this match that it really deserves the qualification in the next round: the dependency on Captain CR7 is almost total and when he is not in his best day, the flaws of this formation and the lack of quality are highlighted. Already at the debut against Spain the defense had shaken and the Portuguese had to thank their phenomenon, otherwise, at this time they would not even have played this game.

It will be the personal challenge between Suarez and Mbappè, the strengths of the two national teams. But it will also be the challenge between the glittering attack of the Transalpines and the rock defense of the South Americans. Will the French be able to break through the wall or will they be rejected and be knocked down in counterattacks? We will discover it on Friday at 4 p.m.

My dear French friends would not have liked it, but it would have been nice to see an all-South American duel between Argentina and Uruguay, Messi against Suarez, Tabarez against Sampaoli. Also because the Europeans have always dominated the scene of the World Cup: in this preliminary phase there are 10 out of 16, against 5 South Americans (1 Asian and 0 African). I would like for once to see a final without Europeans or, why not, two purely South American semifinals. But that's okay, this is football.
