How do people live in the poorest country in the world?
Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world: the poverty rate stands at 66.9% of the population. The East African country has the second lowest GDP per capita according to the World Bank, after the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After the bloody civil war (1993-2005), the country has not yet recovered and lacks adequate sanitary and medical infrastructure. Not to mention the appropriate education centers.
We present some of the realities of daily life in this country:
For every 1,000 people living in Burundi there are 4.8 computers, 20 mobile phones and 4.1 fixed telephones.
The highest people in the world live in the country: the average height of women is 175 centimeters and that of men of 193 centimeters.
The territory of Burundi has only 600 square kilometers of forest: the rest has been eradicated, since the population density is 323 inhabitants per square kilometer.
In the territory of Burundi there are only 7% of the asphalt roads and there are no railways. However, the country has international airport in the capital and 7 small airports.
Children who suffer most from these precarious conditions. The index of respect for children's rights in the country, created by the Humanium association, is 4.67 points out of 10, which corresponds to the level of black, which means that the situation is very serious.
In Burundi, almost half of the population has no access to drinking water, which is why many, especially in rural areas, are forced to hydrate themselves with dirty water, which causes serious health consequences.
Life expectancy is only 50.4 years. Malaria, diarrhea and HIV are some of the most frequent diseases.
Adult male literacy is about half of the population and about a quarter of female literacy. According to recent data, about 70% of children receive an education, even if the school is compulsory for up to 12 years. Unfortunately, children do not have much time to study: one in five children is forced to work to help with family needs.
The University of Burundi is the only one in the country and was founded in 1960. Even medicine does not have a good level: there is only one doctor every 37,581 inhabitants. In all, Burundi has about 200 doctors.
Although Burundi is considered the poorest country in economic terms, in 1974 3 to 5% of the world's nickel reserves were found in its territory. The state also has gold reserves, platinum group metals and rare earth metals.
In the province of Gishora is the set of true Burundian drummers. They are considered the main attraction of the country. The set accompanies any public event.
