How to forge a bowie knife part 1 ----- Come forgiare un coltello bowie parte 1 (eng-ita)
Hello from today i want to start a small "tutorial" series on how to make a bowie knife, a type of blade that was used by colonel Jim Bowie in the early 19th century in the Texan revolution.
This knife will be unique and will apply my own taste to it as i prefer to make original work and not copies from industrial stuff or whatnot.
So for this project i chose some spring steel, reclaimed from a truck leaf spring, i still need to chose the handle material and the guard material but will be on the lines of a brass guard and wood.
Ciao a tutti, oggi voglio iniziare una serie di tutorial su come fare un coltello bowie, tipologia di lama divenuta famosa dopo che il colonnello Jim Bowie la uso nel IX secolo durante la rivoluzione texana .
Questo coltello sarà unico e realizzato nel mio stile, visto che preferisco produrre oggetti originali e non copie di industriali o altro.
per questo progetto ho scelto del acciaio da molla ricavato da una balestra di camion, devo ancora scegliere i rimanenti materiali, ma a grosso modo la guardia sarà in ottone e il manico in legno.

1st phase is to nock down the corners on one end and to forge a taper on the end that will become our edged part.
la prima fase consiste nel forgiare via gli angoli, e iniziare a formare una punta du uno dei due lati, visto che questa punta poi diventerà la lama.
once i drew the taper i mark around 8 cm from the other end and this will become the ricasso and the tang for the blade
una volta formata la punta, segno 8 cm sul altro lato, questa parte diventerrà il ricasso è il codolo nascosto del coltello.
once marked i then proceed to forge the ricasso noth and i use a blacksmith helper tool to speed up the drawing of the to be hidden tang.
a questo punto inizio a forgiare il ricasso e con l aiuto di un attrezzo isolo il materiale che va a formare il codolo.
at this point i proceed to forge the bevels and just tweak the shape of the whole knife
ora continuo a la forma e spostare il materiale dove mi serve, forgio i biselli e correggo eventuali sbilanciamenti nella forma
on the right side you can see the final forged product, as i'm still inexperienced with the hammer so i prefer to grind the clip point typical of a bowie knife.
a destra potete vedere il prodotto finale dopo la forgiatura, visto che ancora non ho l esperienza necessaria la clip point tipica la farò con la levigatrice
this is the last step for now, as you can see i tided up the overall shape and put it a clip point or the base for one.
next is to decide lost of small detail and chose the overall style of the blade.
questo è l ultimo passaggio per questa prima parte, come vedete ho ripulito e definito meglio la forma generale del coltello, ho molato il clip point e ora non rimane che decidere i vari piccoli dettagli.

xD glad to be of inspiration. need to finish some other blades before going on with this one but i want to forge the guard out of some wrought iron instead of brass, just to get out the classic combinations.
will see wrought iron can be a bit iffy if forged under welding temp
Yep, wrought iron can be tricky forging, but it looks amazing when etched. Looking forward at seeing it.
