La Torre del Lebbroso - The Leper's Tower [IT-EN]

Visitando il centro della città di Aosta si può trovare la Torre dello spavento, costruita nel 1191 sui resti di una Torre dell'antica Roma.

Dopo alcuni cambi di proprietà venne poi acquistata dall'Ordine Mauriziano nell'anno 1773 e venne definitivamente chiamata Torre del lebbroso, che venne ristrutturata un ultima volta nel 1890 ed ora adibita dalla Regione Valle d'Aosta a sede espositiva. Purtroppo il suo interno è visitabile soltanto durante i pochi periodi annuali nei quali vengono organizzate delle mostre.

Il nome è dovuto alla presenza tra il 1773 e il 1803 di Pietro Bernardo Guasco da Oneglia, che assieme alla sorella, furono rinchiusi per evitare il contagio dell'intera città nella costruzione, erano tristemente affetti dalla gravissima e famosissima malattia infettiva nonché contagiosa: la Lebbra.

Pietro, proveniente dalla Regione Liguria, ebbe la "fortuna" di poter passare in compagnia della sorella questo orrendo periodo finale della sua vita, fu' l'ultimo a morire tra i due e per questo venne preso come modello per la figura del racconto risalente all'anno 1817 scritto da François-Xavier de Maistre intitolato: “Le lépreux de la Cité d’Aoste” (“Il lebbroso della città di Aosta”).

Lo scrittore conobbe di persona l'uomo segregato nella Torre e parla indirettamente della loro conoscenza nel suo racconto, immedesimandosi in un militare che durante la Campagna delle Alpi del 1797, passò per la città di Aosta ed entrò in un giardino e incontrando un uomo non accettato dal mondo che si occupava di curare ogni minimo aspetto dell'unica cosa che gli era rimasta, un angolo di natura tutto suo dove poter cercare di abbattere noia e solitudine.

Spesso passando dalle parti della Torre mi è capitato di riflettere e pormi una domanda:

Quanta sofferenza avrà potuto provare quel poveruomo?

Provate a di immaginare di dover vivere la vostra vita con questa orribile malattia che logora lentamente ogni parte del corpo arrivando a rendervi irriconoscibili persino ai vostri cari, passare il resto dei vostri giorni nella più completa solitudine, isolati dal resto del mondo, ed essere coscienti di dover convivere con il dolore nella vana speranza che qualcuno trovi una cura ma con la quasi certezza che non avrete scampo. Deve essere estremamente difficile essere coscienti del proprio destino ed essere rinchiusi obbligatoriamente a chiave dentro quattro mura, nonostante non siate colpevoli di alcun crimine, ma malgrado questo essere lo stesso condannati a morte.

Visiting the center of the city of Aosta you can find the Fright Tower, built in 1191 on the remains of an ancient Rome tower.

After some changes of property it was then purchased by the Mauritian Order in the year 1773 and was definitively called Leper's Tower, which was renovated one last time in 1890 and now used by the Aosta Valley Region to exhibition room. Unfortunately, you can only visited the inside during the few annual periods in which exhibitions are organized.

The name is due to the presence between 1773 and 1803 of Pietro Bernardo Guasco da Oneglia, who together with his sister, were locked up to avoid the contagion of the whole city inside this construction, they were sadly affected by the very serious and very famous infectious disease as well as contagious: leprosy.

Pietro, coming from the Region Liguria, had the "luck" to be able to spend with his sister this horrible final period of his life, was the last to die between the two and for this he was taken as model for the figure of the story dating back to the year 1817 written by François-Xavier de Maistre entitled: "Le lépreux de la Cité d'Aoste" ("The Aosta City's Leper").

The writer knew in person this man segregated in the Tower and speaks indirectly of their knowledge in his story, identifying himself with a military man who during the Campaign of the Alps of 1797, passed through Aosta City and entered in a garden meeting a man not accepted by the world, who took care of taking care of every aspect of the only thing he had left, a corner of his own nature where he could try to overcome boredom and loneliness.

Often going through the parts of the Tower, I happened to reflect and ask myself a question:

How much suffering could the poor man have felt?

Try to imagine having to live your life with this horrible disease that slowly wears out every part of your body and makes you unrecognizable even to your beloved ones, spending the rest of your days in complete isolation, away from the rest of the world, and being conscious of having to live with the pain in the vain hope that someone will find a cure but with the almost certainty that you will have no escape. It must be extremely difficult to be aware of one's own destiny and to be locked up within four walls, even though you are not guilty of any crime, but despite that being condemned to death.
