A new mission to Mars
The Insight probe, built by NASA, has been launched. The target is Mars, which will be reached in the coming months. It will land on a volcanic site, with the aim of studying the geology of the Red Planet, focusing in particular on its internal structure.

It will be equipped with an auger able to drill the ground till a depth of 5 meters. A special tool will collect soil samples, rich of information on the chemical composition of the crust. A special thermometer will also measure the heat flow inside the planet. A very awaited mission, which will surely allow important steps forward. Appointment at the end of November for the arrival on Mars.
A crucial period for learning a second language
After the age of 18, to learn a second language becomes increasingly difficult. Only before the age of 10 is it possible to learn how to capture all the nuances of the foreign language as if it were the mother tongue.

This is the result of a group scientists of MIT, who have studied a sample of 670,000 people. A huge number, achieved thanks to the use of Facebook. Researchers have in fact used the social network to propose a series of grammatical questions, specifically designed to establish whether the subject examined is native speaker or not. The reason for this reduction in learning ability may be due to the lower brain plasticity that occurs with age.

Tourism, a multi-billion dollars business, seems to be one of the major contributors to pollutions that are causing the Global Warming.

Old evaluations about emissions of greenhouse gases related to tourism shown values around 2% of global emissions. Now, according to new data, this percentage seems to be around 8%, a value much higher than imagined. The countries more guilty regarding this topic are western ones, where citizens are more inclined to fly on the other side of the planet for tourism. It has long been known that planes are the most polluting vehicles, if compared to the number of travelers they can bring, but these new data oblige each one to reflect on what we are doing.

Una nuova missione verso Marte
La sonda Insight, della NASA, è partita. Obiettivo Marte, che raggiungerà nei prossimi mesi. Atterrerà in un sito vulcanico, con lo scopo di studiare la geologia del Pianeta Rosso, focalizzandosi in particolare sulla sua struttura interna.

Sarà dotato di una trivella in grado di perforare il suolo fino a una profondità di 5 metri. Un apposito strumento raccoglierà i campioni di suolo, ricchi di informazioni sulla composizione chimica della crosta. Un apposito termometro inoltre misurerà il flusso di calore interno al pianeta. Una missione molto attesa, che permetterà sicuramente dei passi avanti importanti. Appuntamento a fine Novembre per l’arrivo su Marte.
Un periodo cruciale per imparare una seconda lingua
Dopo i 18 anni diventa sempre più difficile imparare una seconda lingua oltre alla propria. Solo prima dei 10 è possibile imparare a cogliere tutte le sfumature della lingua straniera come se fosse la lingua madre.

È l’esito a cui sono giunti un gruppo di scienziati del MIT, che hanno studiato un campione di 670’000 persone. Un numero enorme, raggiunto grazie all’uso di Facebook. I ricercatori hanno infatti usato il social network per proporre una serie di quesiti grammaticali, studiati appositamente per stabilire se il soggetto esaminato è madrelingua o meno. Il motivo di questa riduzione nella capacità di apprendimento potrebbe essere dovuta alla minore plasticità cerebrale che si manifesta con l’avanzare dell’età.

A quanto pare, il turismo, un business del valore di miliardi di dollari, è uno dei principali responsabili dell’inquinamento che sta causando il surriscaldamento globale.

Le vecchie stime riguardo l’emissione di gas serra relative al turismo parlavano di valori attorno al 2% delle emissioni globali. Ora, secondo una nuova statistica, si scopre che questa percentuale è invece dell’8%, un valora ben al di sopra di quanto immaginato. I paesi maggiormente chiamati in causa sono quelli occidentali, i cui cittadini sono più inclini a “volare” dall’altra parte del mondo per turismo. Da tempo è noto come l’aereo sia il mezzo di trasporto più inquinante se rapportato al numero di viaggiatori, ma questi nuovi dati obbligano noi tutti a una serie riflessione su quello che stiamo facendo.
