Bajau is an Indonesian population that gets food by fishing in apnea. Over the centuries, they have developed a spleen 50% larger than other Indonesian populations that do not live by fishing.

For the past 1000 years Bajau have immersed in apnea to fish. They can go up to 70 meters deep. A study on Cell shows that the ability of this population to dive for long periods of time is due to the larger size of the spleen. The surprising thing is that this feature is not simply due to the adaptation of the human body to the environment, but is written in the genes of this population. A perfect example of how evolution still acts today.
The ability of plants to repair their DNA.
Plants can repair their DNA much more efficiently than animals and bacteria. This is probably due to the prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Increased exposure means greater absorption of ultraviolet rays, harmful, in the long term, for DNA. The secret to survive would be in a repair mechanism known as "excision", much faster in plants than other species. This discovery could provide useful indications for increasing crop yields.
The shape of the water
A new discovery of Curiosity seems to suggest that processes that brought the surface of Mars to the current condition may be similar to those occurring on earth.

Data and images collected by the probe have highlighted the presence of cracks in the Martian soil, compatible with the cracks created by the drying of muddy sediments. The hypothesis advanced by researchers is that the water present in that zone (maybe a lake) has evaporated in a similar way to what happens on Earth, leaving the muddy exposed to the atmosphere and, due to this, it has progressively dried and cracked.

La Bajau è una popolazione indonesiana che si procura il cibo pescando in apnea. Nel corso dei secoli hanno sviluppato una milza più grande del 50% rispetto alle altre popolazioni indonesiane che non vivono di pesca.

Uno studio su Cell mostra che la capacità di questa popolazione di immergersi per lunghi periodi di tempo è dovuta alle maggiori dimensioni della milza. La cosa sorprendente è che questa caratteristica non è dovuta semplicemente all’adattamento del corpo umano all’ambiente, ma è scritta nei geni di questa popolazione. Un esempio perfetto di come l’evoluzione agisce ancora oggi.
L’abilità delle piante di riparare il proprio DNA.
Le piante riescono a riparare il proprio DNA, in maniera molto più efficiente rispetto ad animali e batteri. Le cause sono da ricercare nella prolungata esposizione alla luce solare.

Il segreto per sopravvivere starebbe in un meccanismo di riparazione noto come “escissione”, molto più rapido nelle piante rispetto alle altre specie. Questa scoperta potrebbe fornire indicazioni utili per aumentare la resa dei raccolti.
La forma dell’acqua
Una nuova scoperta di Curiosity sembra suggerire che i processi che hanno portato la superficie di Marte verso la condizione attuale potrebbero essere simili a quelli che si verificano sulla terra.

I dati e le immagini raccolte dalla sonda hanno evidenziato la presenza di crepe nel suolo marziano, compatibili con delle spaccature create dall’essicamento di sedimenti fangosi. L’ipotesi avanzata dai ricercatori è che l’acqua presente in quella zone (forse un lago) sia evaporata in modo simile a quanto accade sulla terra, lasciando esposto il fondale fangoso che si è progressivamente seccato e spaccato..
