Virus and Alzheimer
A group of researchers of the University of Arizona has found a causal link between Alzheimer and brain interaction with viruses. The scientists compared the genomes of sick individuals to those of healthy individuals, showing that the number of viral genes present in sick individuals is double compared to normal.

The study of Virus and Alzheimer’s focuses in particular on two human herpes viruses, which, by interacting with neurons, alter their correct metabolic functioning, inducing the production of tangled tau proteins, whose presence is strongly correlated with Alzheimer’s. Researchers have also succeeded in determining a number of possible ways in which viruses interact with neurons. This study is a confirmation of the hypotheses that saw the virus as one of the possible causes in the development of the disease. A very important discovery that could make a breakthrough in the development of drugs to stop this disease.
New confirm for General Relativity
Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT), A group of researchers provided the most accurate experimental verification of General Relativity outside the solar system. They exploited a peculiar effect predicted by Einstein's theory of Relativity.

The gravitational lens is the deviation of the light rays by an object of great mass. Although the Theory of Relativity works splendidly, scientists are always looking for possible flaws in the theory, ie: observations not explained by it. The researchers used the VLT to measure the mass of a distant galaxy, and the Hubble images to verify that the degree of light deviation was exactly that predicted for objects of mass equal to that of the galaxy. The measure provided a result perfectly in line with the predictions, demonstrating once again the validity of General Relativity.
China and plastic
When we talk about pollution, we are used to being referred to a place China in the list; few people know that, until few months ago, the Asian country accepted and disposed more than 70% of the global plastic wastes. But now thing are going to chang!.

This news is more worrying than it might seem. In fact, since January China has stopped to importing plastic wastes from the rest of the world, and has decided to promote its’ impressive recycling industry only with plastic produced within the country. This is a great problem for the future, especially if we consider that today only 9% of the global plastic produced has been recovered or properly disposed off. If we do not find a valid solution to the disposal of plastic waste products, in the next few years we may find ourselves literally submerged in these wastes.

Tra virus ed Alzheimer
Un gruppo di ricercatori dell’università dell’Arizona ha trovato un nesso causale tra l’interazione del cervello con i virus e lo sviluppo dell’Alzheimer. Per capirlo sono stati confrontati i genomi di individui malati con quelli di individui sani. Il numero di geni virali presenti negli individui malati si è rivelata essere doppia rispetto al normale.

Lo studio si focalizza in particolare su due herpes virus umani, che, interagendo con i neuroni, ne alterano il corretto funzionamento metabolico, inducendo la produzione di proteine tau aggrovigliate, la cui presenza è fortemente correlata con l’Alzheimer. I ricercatori sono riusciti anche a determinare una serie di modi possibili con cui i virus interagiscono con i neuroni. Questo studio è una conferma delle ipotesi che vedevano nei virus una delle possibili cause nello sviluppo della malattia. Una scoperta importantissima, che potrebbe dare una svolta nello sviluppo dei farmaci per bloccare questa malattia.
Un nuovo test per la Relatività
Utilizzando il Very Large Telescope (VLT), un gruppo di ricercatori ha fornito la più accurata verifica sperimentale della Relatività Generale all’infuori del sistema solare. Per farlo hanno sfruttato un effetto peculiare predetto dalla teoria di Einstein.

La lente gravitazionale è la deviazione dei raggi luminosi ad opera di un oggetto di grande massa. Nonostante la Teoria della Relatività funzioni splendidamente, gli scienziati sono sempre alla ricerca di possibili falle nella teoria, cioè osservazioni non spiegabili dalla stessa. I ricercatori hanno usato il VLT per misurare la massa di una galassia lontana e le immagini di Hubble per verificare che il grado di deviazione della luce fosse esattamente quello predetto per oggetti di massa pari a quella della galassia. La misura ha fornito un risultato perfettamente in accordo con le previsioni, dimostrando ancora una volta che la Relatività è una teoria solidissima.
Cina e plastica
Molto spesso, quando si parla di inquinamento, siamo portati a collocare la Cina nella lista dei cattivi; eppure, in pochi sanno che fino a pochi mesi fa il paese asiatico accettava e smaltiva più del 70% degli scarti globali di plastica. Ora, però, le cose stanno cambiando.

La notizia è più preoccupante di quanto potrebbe sembrare. Da gennaio, infatti, la Cina ha smesso di importare scarti plastici dal resto del mondo e ha deciso di mandare avanti la propria imponente industria del riciclaggio solamente con la plastica prodotta all’interno del paese. Questo rappresenta un evidente problema per il futuro, soprattutto se consideriamo che già oggi solo il 9% della plastica prodotta è stato recuperato o correttamente smaltito. Se non corriamo ai ripari, nei prossimi anni potremmo trovarci letteralmente sommersi da questi rifiuti.
