Animal intelligence
The most intelligent animals are those that most frequently approach our cities, often while looking for food. But these are also the animals that most often come into conflict with us, and it seems like a coevolution is going on: something like an arms race.

The research published on Natural Behaviour, shows (thanks to an enormous amount of collected data) how animals that are more able to adapt living near humans are also those that most frequently cause problems. Crows, for example, have a great memory, through which they are able to exploit our habits to find food; but this can be a problem when the birds spread trash by opening bags. The most interesting aspect of the research, however, is the arms race through which animals are always looking for new strategies to face problems caused by humans beings.
Smartphone to face suicide
The use of specific applications for smartphones could help, in future, to monitor the people at risk of suicide. Today the checks are carried out on weekly or monthly basis and, in future, even every hour.

It’s daily monitoring, even a few hours of monitoring, that can help to determine the psychophysical conditions of a patient at risk. The task of smartphone applications is to propose questionnaires, which are used to determine if the subject will be at risk of suicide within a few hours, and that’s not all. Applications for monitoring physical parameters could provide equally valuable information. However, there is a critical issue in these methods of investigation: the questionnaire only works if the patient answers to the questions, which is not obvious if he has decided to commit suicide.
The traditions of birds
The songs of birds can be handed down from generation to generation, even for long periods of time. This is the discovery made by a group of researchers from Marry Queen University, in England.

The scientists studied the sparrows that live in some American swamps, discovering that each of them reproduces the same sounds of the previous generation. Within the same species may exist different types of singing, equivalent to the human "dialect", but each member reproduces the sounds produced by the birds near which he grew up. An unexpected discovery, because it shows that "traditions" can be handed down even without the use of specific cognitive abilities.

Intelligenza animale
Gli animali più intelligenti sono quelli che con maggior frequenza si avvicinano agli insediamenti umani, soprattutto alla ricerca di cibo. Ma questi sono anche gli animali che più spesso entrano in conflitto con noi, facendo sembrare che ci sia in atto una sorta di co-evoluzione: una specie di corsa agli armamenti.

La ricerca pubblicata su Natural Behaviour, mette in luce attraverso una vasta raccolta di dati, come gli animali che riescono ad adattarsi meglio a contatto con l’uomo sono anche quelli che con maggior frequenza ci creano problemi. I corvi, per esempio, sono dotati di una grande memoria, attraverso la quale sono in grado di sfruttare le nostre abitudini per trovare cibo; questo, però, può rappresentare un problema quando i volatili spargono la spazzatura aprendo i sacchetti. L’aspetto più interessante della ricerca è la corsa agli armamenti attraverso la quale gli animali cercano sempre nuovo strategie per aggirare le difficoltà che l’uomo gli mette davanti.
Smartphone contro il suicidio
L’utilizzo di specifiche applicazioni per smartphone potrebbero aiutare, nel prossimo futuro, a monitorare i soggetti a rischio di suicidio, con tempistiche molto più strette rispetto a quelle considerate fino ad oggi.

Si parla di monitoraggi quotidiani, addirittura dell’ordine di qualche ora, che servono a determinare le condizioni psicofisiche del paziente a rischio. Il compito delle applicazioni per smartphone è quello di proporre questionari che servono a stabilire se il soggetto sarà a rischio suicidio entro poche ore, ma non solo. Le applicazioni per il monitoraggio dei parametri fisici, potrebbero fornire informazioni altrettanto preziose. Tuttavia, c’è una criticità di fondo in questi metodi di indagine: il questionario funziona solo se il paziente risponde alle domande, cosa non scontata se ha già deciso di farla finita.
Le tradizioni degli uccelli
I canti degli uccelli possono essere tramandati di generazione in generazione, anche per periodi di tempo lunghissimi. È la scoperta fatta da un gruppo di ricercatori della Marry Queen University, in Inghilterra.

Gli scienziati hanno studiato i passeri che vivono in alcuni paludi americane, scoprendo che ognuno di essi riproduce le stesse tonalità della generazione precedente. All’interno della stessa specie possono esistere differenti tipologie di canto, equivalenti al “dialetto” umano, ma ogni membro riproduce i suoni prodotti dagli uccelli vicino a cui è cresciuto. Una scoperta inaspettata, perché dimostra che le “tradizioni” possono tramandarsi anche senza l’uso di specifiche capacità cognitive.
