Fusions of galaxies at the origin of the Milky Way
Thanks to the data of the European satellite Gaia it has been hypothesized that, probably, our galaxies was formed thanks to the fusion of minor galaxies, and a single large fusion event.

The Gaia satellite measures the position and trajectory of the Milky Way stars, to create a three-dimensional map of our galaxy. The researchers focused in particular on the study of the halo of stars surrounding the center of the galaxy, identifying five groups of stars that seem to belong to the remains of many small galaxies that have now disappeared. However, most of the stars analyzed seem to belong to a much larger structure,that today have merged with the Milky Way. The peculiarity of these stars is the retrograde motion respect to the motion of the galactic disk. This study provides new information useful for the understanding the evolution of the Milky Way.
Fossils of ancient frogs
Four fossil frogs have been found, trapped in amber. They are very old, and offer a glimpse of the past, in particular on the evolutionary history of amphibians. Could this be the starting of the real Jurassic World…..

They have been trapped in amber drops for 99 million years, even if only partially. None of the fossils, in fact, is complete, and this makes their classification difficult within the evolutionary ramifications. However, inside the amber, have also been trapped worms and insects typical of tropical areas, and this has allowed researchers to take a look at the history of the amphibians that inhabited those areas.
Live gene transfer
Thanks to a new fluorescence technique, some researchers have been able to observe in vivo a live gene transfer within some cholera bacteria.

Many bacterial families are able to assimilate genetic information directly from their environment, recovering free DNA or RNA fragments in their environment itself. These mechanisms are the basis of bacterial evolution and represent an important way for the development of a much more resistance drug. Thanks to this new technique it will now be possible to deepen the study into this phenomena, and scientists hope that this will somehow help us in the fight against drug resistance.

Grazie ai dati del satellite europeo Gaia è stato ipotizzato che, con tutta probabilità, la nostra galassie si è formata anche grazie alla fusione di galassie minori, ed un singolo evento di fusione di grande dimensioni.

Il satellite Gaia misura la posizione e la traiettoria delle stelle della Via Lattea, con l’obiettivo di costruire una mappa tridimensionale della nostra galassia. I ricercatori si sono focalizzati in particolare sullo studio dell’alone di stelle che circonda il centro della galassia, individuando cinque gruppi di stelle che sembrano appartenere ai resti di altrettante piccole galassie ora scomparse. Tuttavia, la maggior parte delle stelle analizzate sembrano appartenere ad una struttura molto più grande, oggi fusa con la Via Lattea. La particolarità di queste stelle è il moto retrogrado rispetto al moto del disco galattico. Questo studio fornisce nuove informazioni utili per comprendere la storia della Via Lattea.
Fossili di rane antichissime
Sono state ritrovati quattro rane fossili, rimaste intrappolate nell’ambra. Sono antichissime, e offrono uno sguardo sul passato, in particolare sulla storia evolutiva degli anfibi.

Sono rimaste intrappolate per 99 milioni di anni in gocce d’ambra, anche se solo parzialmente. Nessuno dei fossili è infatti completo, e questo rende difficoltosa la loro classificazione all’interno delle ramificazioni evolutive. Tuttavia, all’interno dell’ambra sono rimasti intrappolati anche vermi e insetti tipici delle zone tropicali, e questo ha permesso ai ricercatori gettare uno sguardo sulla storia degli anfibi che abitavano quelle zone.
Trasferimento genico in diretta
Grazie ad una nuova tecnica di fluorescenza, alcuni ricercatori sono riusciti ad osservare in live il trasferimento genico all’interno di alcuni batteri del colera.

Moltissimi ceppi batterici sono in grado di assimilare informazione genetica direttamente dall’ambiente, recuperando frammenti di DNA o RNA liberi nell’ambiente. Questi meccanismi sono alla base dell’evoluzione batterica e rappresentano una via importante per lo sviluppo di molto farmaco resistenze. Attraverso questa nuova tecnica sarà ora possibile studiare meglio questi fenomeni, e la speranza è che questo possa in qualche modo aiutare proprio nella lotta contro la farmacoresistenza.
