Drugs and neurons
The use of drugs such as LSD or ecstasy alters the connections between the neurons, causing the change of the structure. This is the first confirmation of an hypothesis that has been advanced years ago. This discovery could pave the way for possible new therapies against mental illness.

Experimenting with cells in vitro, the researchers found that the use of substances such as LSD or ecstasy increases the number of dendrites and synapses of neurons, the terminations of the axons that brain cells use to exchange information. In short, the use of drugs stimulates brain plasticity. One day these substances could be useful for the production of drugs to combat certain mental disorders and addictions, such as depression and alcoholism. Drugs that are used today are relatively inefficient: only 60% of patients achieve significant improvements.
The effects of light on oil
In 2010, due to a break, 3 million of barrels of oil leaked from the Deepwater Horizon oil tankers. Now a new study shows that the presence of pollutants in the environment could last longer than expected.

The reason would be sunlight. According to the researchers, when the light hits the oil that is still floating on the ocean, during the days following the disaster, it would catalyze a chemical reaction between the oxygen present in the environment and the oil itself. This process of oxygenation has made the substances contained in the oil more resistant to degradation, so much that even today they are found virtually unaltered compared to the time of their formation.
Opportunity is in the dark
A gigantic sandstorm is underway on Mars, and is creating issues for the Opportunity rover. If the storm does not settle within the next days, rover's batteries may be discharged.

Sandstorms are not unusual on Mars. Sometimes they are so big to cover a large part of the planet's surface. It is the first time, however, that a storm of this magnitude is observed, able to obscure almost completely the surface from sunlight. The Opportunity rover is powered by a set of solar panels, which at this time do not provide enough energy to operate. Opportunity is therefore using energy supplies to keep warm the tools essential to its survival. During the next few days the engineers will check his status, hoping the storm will end as soon as possible.

Sostanze stupefacenti e neuroni
L’uso di sostanze stupefacenti quali LSD o ecstasy altera le connessioni tra i neuroni, facendone cambiare la struttura. È la prima conferma di un’ipotesi avanzata già da diverso tempo. Questa scoperta potrebbe aprire la strada a possibili nuove terapie contro le malattie psichiche.

Sperimentando su cellule in vitro, i ricercatori hanno scoperto che l’uso di sostanze come LSD o ecstasy fa aumentare il numero dei dendriti e delle sinapsi dei neuroni, cioè le terminazioni degli assoni che le cellule cerebrali utilizzano per scambiare informazioni. In poche parole, l’utilizzo delle sostanze stupefacenti stimola la plasticità cerebrale. Un giorno queste sostanze potrebbero rivelarsi utili per la produzione di farmaci atti a combattere alcuni disturbi mentali e le dipendenze, quali depressione e alcolismo. I farmaci che vengono utilizzati oggi sono relativamente inefficienti: solo il 60% dei pazienti ottiene dei miglioramenti significativi.
Gli effetti della luce sul petrolio
Nel 2010 dalla piattaforma petrolifera Deepwater Horizon fuoriuscirono, a causa di una rottura, 3 milioni di barili di petrolio. Ora un nuovo studio mostra che la presenza delle sostanze inquinanti nell’ambiente potrebbe protrarsi per molto più tempo del previsto.

Il motivo sarebbe la luce del Sole. Secondo i ricercatori, quando la luce ha colpito il petrolio ancora galleggiante sull’oceano, nei giorni successivi al disastro, avrebbe innescato una reazione chimica tra l’ossigeno presente nell’ambiente e il petrolio stesso. Questa processo di ossigenazione ha reso i sottoprodotti del petrolio più resistenti alla degradazione, così tanto che ancora oggi vengono trovati praticamente inalterati rispetto all’epoca della loro formazione.
Opportunity è al buio
Una tempesta di sabbia di dimensioni gigantesche è in corso su Marte e sta creando problemi al rover Opportunity. Se la tempesta non si calmerà entro i prossimi giorni, le batterie del rover potrebbero scaricarsi.

Le tempeste di sabbia non sono insolite su Marte. A volte sono così grandi da ricoprire buona parte della superficie del pianeta. È la prima volta tuttavia che viene osservata una tempesta di tale entità, in grado di oscurare quasi totalmente la superficie dalla luce solare. Il rover Opportunity è alimentato da un set di pannelli solari, che in questo momento non forniscono l’energia sufficiente per funzionare. Opportunity sta quindi utilizzando le scorte di energia per tenere al caldo gli strumenti essenziali al suo funzionamento. Durante i prossimi giorni gli ingegneri controlleranno il suo stato, sperando che la tempesta si plachi il prima possibile.
