The shape of heart
A team of researchers from the Max-Delbrück-Centrum for molecular medicine in Berlin has identified the mechanisms that lead to the formation of the heart from the indefinite embryo structure.

The study, published in Nature, was performed using as model organism Zebrafish, a small fish whose heart develops very quickly and thus ensures easy observation. The mechanisms that lead to the formation of the heart are highly conserved in all species, and the similarities between man and fish are enough. Researchers have succeeded in identifying all the chemical steps that lead to the correct formation of the heart, and this could be very important to better understand the cardiac malformations even in humans.
Too many neutrinos
An excess of neutrinos was detected in an experiment underway at the Fermi National Laboratory, and if confirmed could mark a turning point in physics, from particles to cosmology.

Obviously there is a lot caution, because the discovery would be epochal. The excess of neutrinos detected could be explained simply by hypothesizing the existence of a fourth type of neutrinos (to date we know three), not predicted by the Standard Model. However, there are some scientists that criticize this result, arguing that the excesses of measured neutrinos are due to systematic errors of the experiment. The confirmation or denial of this hypothesis will come in the next few years.
Killer plastic
A small whale, found in Thailand, died after days of agony, after ingesting 80 plastic bags. An event that shows the dramatic level of pollution reached by the Earth's oceans.

It was found in bad conditions, with difficulty in moving and breathing: it probably confused plastic bags for food, and over time they accumulated in its stomach, compromising its usual diet. After iis death, 8 kilos of plastic were found in its stomach, but this is certainly not an isolated case. Statistics show that in Thailand alone, an average of 300 animals die each year due to plastics, but in general, all over the world this phenomenon is becoming increasingly serious.

Lo studio, pubblicato su Nature, è stato eseguito utilizzando come organismo modello Zebrafish, un piccolo pesce il cui cuore si sviluppa molto velocemente e garantisce quindi una facile osservazione. I meccanismi che portano alla formazione del cuore sono altamente conservati in tutte le specie, e le similitudini tra uomo e pesce sono molte. I ricercatori sono riusciti a identificare tutti i passaggi chimici che portano alla corretta formazione del cuore, e questo, in futuro, potrebbe essere molto importante per comprendere meglio le malformazioni cardiache anche negli umani.
Troppi neutrini
Un eccesso di neutrini è stato rilevato in un esperimento in corso al Fermi National Laboratory, e se confermato potrebbe segnare una svolta nella fisica, dalle particelle alla cosmologia.

Ovviamente la prudenza è tantissima, perchè la scoperta sarebbe epocale. L’eccesso di neutrini rilevato potrebbe essere spiegato semplicemente ipotizzando l’esistenza di un quarta tipologia di neutrini (ad oggi se ne conoscono tre), non prevista dal Modello Standard. C’è però chi avanza delle obiezioni a questo risultato, sostenendo che gli eccessi di neutrini misurati siano solamente dovuti ad errori sistematici dell’esperimento non previsti. La conferma o la smentita di questa ipotesi arriverà nei prossimi anni.
Plastica killer
Una piccola balena trovata in Thailandia è morta dopo giorni di agonia, dopo aver ingerito 80 borse di plastica. Un evento che mostra il drammatico livello di inquinamento raggiunto dagli oceani della Terra.

È stata trovata in condizioni pessime, aveva difficoltà a muoversi e respirare: probabilmente ha scambiato le borse di plastica per cibo, e nel tempo si sono accumulate nel suo stomaco, compromettendo la sua dieta abituale. Dopo la sua morte sono stati trovati nel sue stomaco 8 chili di plastica, ma il suo non è certo un caso isolato. Le statistiche indicano che solo In Thailandia muoiono mediamente 300 animali all’anno per colpa della plastica, e globalmente questo fenomeno sta diventando sempre più grave.

Un altro martedì, un altro mito sfatato da @egotheist. Oggi ci parla di una discutibile terapia contro il cancro, appartenente al filone della medicina hameriana; terapia che può già vantare ben 140 vittime confermate. E sì, avete capito bene… Vittime.
