Ma dove si trova questo Castello e questa tradizione

Palma di Montechiaro fondata da Carlo Caro e Tomasi di Lampedusa , la “Città del Gattopardo”, ovvero Palma di Montechiaro, sorge nelle vicinanze di Agrigento.Tra le varie bellezze di questa piccola cittadina di circa ventimila abitanti oggi ci soffermiamo sul Castello Chiaramontano che, tra i vari castelli chiaramontani presenti in Sicilia, è l’unico che imponente si affaccia a picco sul mar Mediterraneo.

Costruito intorno al 1350 dalla famiglia Chiaramonte il Castello ha svolto fin dalla sua origine la sua funzione di difesa e avvistamento contro i pirati musulmani che solcavano il Mediterraneo. Dalla fine del 1300 questo modificò il suo nome in Castello di Montechiaro, a seguito dell’uccisione di Andrea Chiaramonte (che si era ribellato al Re Martino I d’Aragona).Ed è proprio il Castello di Montechiaro, ed in particolare la sua piccola cappella, a custodire un tesoro come la Madonna del Castello o, come la chiamano i Palmesi, “a bedda Matri du Casteddu”.
rattasi di una statua in marmo, dal manto dorato, scolpita dall’artista palermitano Antonello Gagini nel XVI secolo che, oltre alla purezza e bellezza dei lineamenti del viso, con tratti quasi angelici, presenta una caratteristica alquanto particolare e non comune alle altre statuette di Madonna col Bambino che si vedono comunemente. Infatti, osservando la nostra Madonnina si può benissimo notare che uno dei seni è scoperto e Gesù Bambino vi poggia la sua piccola mano facendo un giro col braccino.

Si narra che i turchi, intorno alla seconda metà del 1500, assalirono il Castello in cerca di tesori nascosti e portarono via la statua della Madonna. Come per miracolo essa divenne così pesante che i pirati dovettero abbandonarla in mare distruggendo però, in segno di oltraggio, le due sacre teste.
La statua venne ripescata dai castellani e riportata subito indietro per essere “restaurata”. Ad oggi è possibile notare, nelle teste, delle lievi ridipinture (per qualcuno queste sono le prove della veridicità delle leggenda). Da allora la Madonna del Castello è amata e venerata da tutti
Essa viene festeggiata la Domenica successiva a quella di Pasqua quando un corteo di migliaia di devoti marcia, dal paese al castello, a piedi nudi per andare a prendere la statua ed accompagnarla, a spalla ed a suon di canti dialettali e giovani a cavallo, fino al paese. Dopo aver girato tutte le vie di Palma di Montechiaro, la Madonnina si ferma presso la Chiesa Madre dove rimane per otto giorni.
La Domenica successiva essa s’incammina verso il Monastero delle Benedettine. Qui, tra la venerazione dei fedeli e gli affascinanti e suggestivi canti delle suore, la nostra Signora del Castello sosta fino alla Domenica prima dell’Ascensione. Nel pomeriggio, essa ripercorrerà la via del ritorno al suo Castello.
Resta una delle feste mie preferite dove tengo il pellegrinaggio quando sono in paese ahime sono fuori per lavoro ma non si dimenticano le origini concludo questo post con un immagine mia e di mia moglie in uno dei nostri pellegrinaggi

But where is this Castle and this tradition
It is located in a small town precisely mine, lol xd in the south of Sicily
Palma di Montechiaro founded by Carlo Caro and Tomasi di Lampedusa, the "City of the Leopard", or Palma di Montechiaro, is located near Agrigento. Among the various beauties of this small town of about twenty thousand inhabitants today we focus on the Chiaramontano Castle which, among the various Chiaramonte castles in Sicily, it is the only one that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.
Built around 1350 by the Chiaramonte family the Castle has played since its origin its function of defense and sighting against the Muslim pirates that sailed the Mediterranean. From the end of the 1300s this changed its name to Castello di Montechiaro, following the killing of Andrea Chiaramonte (who had rebelled against King Martin I of Aragon). And it is precisely the Castle of Montechiaro, and in particular its small chapel, to guard a treasure like the Madonna del Castello or, as the Palmesi call it, "a bedda Matri du Casteddu".

In fact, observing our little Madonna, we can very well notice that one of the breasts is uncovered and the Child Jesus rests his small hand on it, making a turn with the arm.
It is said that the Turks, in the second half of the 1500s, attacked the Castle in search of hidden treasures and took away the statue of the Madonna. Miraculously, it became so heavy that the pirates had to abandon it at sea, destroying the two sacred heads as a sign of contempt.
The statue was fished out by the castellans and brought back immediately to be "restored". Today it is possible to notice, in the heads, slight repainting (for some these are the proofs of the truth of the legend). Since then the Madonna del Castello is loved and venerated by all
)It is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter when a procession of thousands of devotees marches, from the village to the castle, barefoot to pick up the statue and accompany it, on the shoulder and to the sound of dialect songs and young people on horseback, until To the country. After touring all the streets of Palma di Montechiaro, the Madonnina stops at the Mother Church where it remains for eight days.
The following Sunday it goes to the Benedictine Monastery. Here, between the veneration of the faithful and the fascinating and evocative songs of the nuns, our Lady of the Castle stops until the Sunday before the Ascension. In the afternoon, it will retrace the path back to its castle.
It remains one of my favorite parties where I hold the pilgrimage when I am in the country but I am out for work but do not forget the origins I conclude this post with an image of myself and my wife on one of our pilgrimages
