Ci alzammo la notte, come ogni notte, alle 3, io e mio padre.
Questa era l'ora nostra, solo per noi. Caffè bollente pronto, preparato da mia madre che si svegliava insieme a noi da anni.
Arrivammo al porto con le biciclette, tra la foschia che odorava di salsedine e pescato,silenziose presenze ci osservavano con imperturbabilità, le loro forme appena delineate nel buio. Ondeggiavano al rollio dell'acqua e i loro alberi ci salutavano lentamente con grazia.
Mio padre accese il motore, il suono riecheggiò nella baia, il fumo della combustione della nafta si mescolò all'umidità densa della notte.

We got up at night, like every night, at 3 o'clock, my father and I.
This was our time, just for us. Hot coffee ready, prepared by my mother who woke up with us for years.
We arrived at the port with bicycles, in the mist that smelled of salt and fish, silent presences watched us with imperturbability, their shapes just outlined in the dark. They swayed at the rolling of the water and their trees greeted us slowly with grace.
My father started the engine, the sound echoed in the bay, the smoke from the burning of naphtha mingled with the dense humidity of the night.
We set sail.
