Il motivo principale di tante costruzioni fortificate è geografico, le coste italiane, isole comprese, si sviluppano linearmente per 7500 km ed è facile immaginare lo scenario di conquista che si apriva ai popoli invasori

Nel medioevo cominciano le prime edificazioni di torri, forti e bastioni lungo le coste italiane, i primi esempi di edifici fortificati adatti alla difesa e all'offesa.
Il tutto avveniva seguendo criteri ben precisi: avere una grandissima visuale sul mare ed essere ben visibile dall'interno, dalle altre fortificazioni amiche o alleate collegate.
A volte il collegamento con le torri e altre fortificazioni, avveniva per camminamenti di ronda molto lunghi o tramite strade battute con messaggeri a cavallo.
Le sentinelle, infatti, al primo allarme trasmettevano dei segnali luminosi alle postazioni più lontane che a loro volte comunicavano alle forze di terra l'imminente pericolo e organizzavano le difese.

Dalle torri a pianta quadrata medievali si passa poi, nel Rinascimento a costruzioni con tipologia a pianta circolare, dotati di ponti levatoi ad ingranaggi, con argani e i relativi fossati (senza coccodrilli).
In questo periodo e nel Manierismo si avranno progetti di architetti che faranno la Storia dell'Arte, ad esempio Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, Michelangelo Buonarroti e Leonardo Da Vinci.

Attualmente le torri costiere sono elementi di storia e architettura che hanno un valore enorme, così bene integrate nel paesaggio, che rappresentano un valore aggiunto di intensità pari alle stesse opere d'arte. E' auspicabile che la conservazione di questi patrimoni in cui anche le pietre recano testimonianze senza tempo, siano sempre tutelati e restaurati in nome di una tradizione di cui l'Italia è un testimone chiave.

In the Middle Ages the first edifications of towers, forts and bastions along the Italian coasts began, the first examples of fortified buildings suitable for defense and offense.
Everything took place following very precise criteria: having a great view of the sea and being clearly visible from the inside, from the other friendly fortifications or connected allies.
Sometimes the connection with the towers and other fortifications, took place on very long walkways or through beaten roads with horse messengers.
The sentinels, in fact, at the first alarm transmitted light signals to the most distant positions that at times communicated to the ground forces the imminent danger and organized the defenses.

From the towers with a square medieval plan one passes then, in the Renaissance, to buildings with a circular plan type, equipped with geared drawbridges, with winches and the relative ditches (without crocodiles).
In this period and in Mannerism there will be projects by architects who will do the History of Art, for example Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Currently the coastal towers are elements of history and architecture that have enormous value, so well integrated into the landscape, which represent an added value of intensity equal to the same works of art. It is to be hoped that the preservation of these heritages in which the stones also bear timeless testimonies are always protected and restored in the name of a tradition of which Italy is a key witness.
