I figli di madre terra furono giganti dalle innumerevoli braccia. I ciclopi erano tre, tutti monocoli, e i loro figli vagavano nelle caverne sicule, del vulcano etna. Si asserisce che i ciclopi erano membri di un'associazione di fabbri, compostasi nella civiltà primitiva.Nel senso letterale del termine ciclope vuol dire "occhio rotondo" e si racconta che avessero sulla fronte disegnati, o meglio, tatuati cerchi concentrici in onore al sole che era fuoco che dava alimento alle sue fornaci. I Traci si tatuavano fino all'epoca classica.
