Crypto in Ireland - Issue 1

“If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.”- Steve Jobs

For 10 years I have been working in the Financial Services Sector in Ireland. Like most 9-5's it's hard to see what's going on outside the daily grind. Monday to Friday leaves you with little time or energy to do much else.

My Steemit Journey...

I discovered Steemit in October 2016 and my journey down the crypto rabbit hole began. There was this whole other world out there, being built by pioneers.

New ideas, new ways of doing things, intense energy and inspiring vision.

If your a millennial you may be thinking you missed out on the dot com era. Well if your trying to find an equivalent Blockchain, Distributed Ledger Technology, Cryptocurrency, whatever label you want to put on it is the new gold rush.

Crypto in Ireland

This is the first in a series of weekly newsletters where I will be covering what is happening on the Dublin & Irish Blockchain scene.

It's now 2018 and I have finally taken my head out of the sand. I am amazed by what I see around me in Dublin. There is a vibrant ICO scene, Blockchain Labs, Inncubation Hubs, Crypto Cafes.

There is even an Irish Artist making an ERC20 token with his blood!

When you look around the world at the Crypto Sector the hotspots are San Francisco, Toronto, Austin, New York, London, Berlin, Seoul, and I'd go so far as to say Dublin is probably somewhere close to these big name tech hubs.

Weekly News

Deloitte Blockchain Meetup

Last week I attended a meetup in the Deloitte Blockchain Lab In Dublins Silicon Docs. The meetup was presentation style in the Deloitte Dublin offices with an informal networking opportunity before and after. The meetup began with an introduction that covered the Bitcoin Lightning Network followed by a presentation by a company from Barcelona (lescovix) that was promoting their ICO.

Steemit and Bitshares Meetup

I didn't attend this but a fellow Steemian @paulag organised this meetup in Tallaght.

Irish Art

I will have to write a full post about this guy, whom I just came across this morning, but an Irish Artist (and Andy Tian’s Gifto platform) are donating $1m in Ethereum to Coderdojo, a global programming club for kids.

This Week

This week I will be heading to two events.

  • The Blockchain Association of Ireland fortnightly meetup tonight in Dublin City Center
  • The @steem-dublin monthly meetup Saturday in Dublin City Center.

New to Crypto?

This linked article by Deloitte gives a great overview of the possibilities, and some of the industries that will be affected by it.

Weekly Tip

Looking to get an intro to Bitcoin, recommended at the Deloitte meetup by several people was the book Mastering Bitcoin by Andreas Antonopoulos.

Thank you for reading this. I write on Steemit about Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Travel.

No need to worry about missing the dot com era. The cryptotech looks like it's going to overshadow the dot com tech.

Bitcoin is just the basis of this technology. It will be the currency, which will be used to build other technologies. For example, I bought my Steem Power with Bitcoins.

New products such as Basic Attention Token and the Brave browser have the potential to render the dot-com giants useless.

Steemit is a good platform, but it has its own challenges, which need some adjustments to their algorithms, especially to the reward distribution system.

Andreas Antonopoulos is the man. I didn't care about Bitcoin until I watched his London Real interview. Then I started buying Bitcoin and now, I'm here. So, I owe a lot to him. He has a great YouTube channel too and of course Twitter and Patreon accounts.

Good to see some movement around the place. The crypto cafe looks interesting for a project and i have started to come across a lot more Irish people on the site in general. All good signs for the future with the blockchain developments going on as well.
Waiting for the next projects now.

Cool. Maybe I should do a Crypto in Taipei series too! ^^

Great idea. I am sure there is some interesting stuff happening. Steemit is the place to share the knowledge.

Thanks @eroche - thanks so much for signposting the Deloitte piece - this is going to be a useful resource/reference material. If you can partake in establishing Dublin as a Top 10 Blockchain hotspot/destination - that would be amazing!

hopefully the show is successful @eroche and do not forget to share the experience in your next post with us who did not have the opportunity to participate.
