70+ US Army & Navy veterans urge Trump to stop Iran war-mongering, stick to diplomacy

in #iran5 years ago

An open letter signed by 76 retired generals, admirals, and ambassadors calls on US President Donald Trump to stop stoking fears of war with Iran and ditch “ineffective” sanctions and threats in favor of “aggressive diplomacy.”
In a letter published on Friday by ‘War on the Rocks’, which specializes in reports on national security and defense issues, former US military top brass made an urgent plea to Trump to avoid further escalation with Iran and turn to diplomacy, rather than setting the stage for confrontation with military reinforcements.

They argue that the ongoing exchange of harsh statements between Tehran and Washington as well as the deployment of a US carrier strike group and B-52 bombers to the Middle East, along with claims that Iran is plotting an attack on Americans, are “highly concerning and make for a potentially deadly confrontation.”

While Washington insists that its massive build-up in the region can be credited for deterring Iran from taking bold action, the veterans say that both countries are to blame for creating uncertainty by “taking actions the other views as dangerously provocative at best and the beginning of forceful action at worst.”

Instead of trading verbal blows with Iran and flexing military muscle, the US government should explore diplomatic means of breaking the deadlock rather than dragging the US into a shooting war with potentially disastrous consequences, they said.

"A war with Iran, either by choice or miscalculation, would produce dramatic repercussions in an already destabilized Middle East and drag the United States into another armed conflict at immense financial, human, and geopolitical cost."

In advocating a peaceful resolution of the conflict, the signees pointed out that threats to use force and crippling economic sanctions, the two most favored tools in the Trump administration’s playbook on Iran, have been vastly “ineffective” and have so far only strengthened Tehran’s resolve.

To avoid a disastrous all-out war, Washington should do away with saber-rattling so it can engage in “common-sense diplomacy” and establish direct communication between US and Iranian elites.

Trump seemingly took pride in refuting media reports that Washington seeks to engage in talks with Iran to defuse tension, insisting that the ball is in Iran’s court.

While both Tehran and Washington have downplayed the chances of a military confrontation, the White House keeps inflating the supposed Iran menace, sending an additional 1,500 troops to the region. On Friday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited the need “to deter Iran aggression” for sidestepping Congress and clearing $8.1 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

I would like to thank RT and the Ranking Veterans who had input into this article. Much of the information is based on experience and carries some amount of weight with other Vets.
What I am about to say has been beaten to death in the past, but it is a subject that can never be overlooked. Our Executive Branch is dealing in offensive weapons to the primary leader of the 9/11 attacks, Saudi Arabia. The current executive branch is "giving" Saudi Arabia information for the creation of offensive Nuclear weapons so the "Balance of Power" in the region will remain constant.
Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo has no clue what he is doing by antagonizing our allies. While the National Security Advisor has nothing by way of active intelligence when it comes to issues of War. All he wants is a war in which his wealthy friends will get wealthier. All he is saying is the same that was said during the lead up to the Iraqi conflict "Credible Intelligence" which is nothing but another way of saying in todays climate "I don't know, but I want" whatever it is they want at the time.
When I was in the U.S.M.C. when our commanders said "credible" we knew that was actionable intel. When the current CIC says "credible" it only means "I don't like them".
Again, Thank you and I apologize for running on.
Mike

nailed !!

great article btw but no ipfs / dtune...

The thing is that as they say, it's a mutual problem. Putting the corrupt sha was a very bad idea... now it's the follow up of those events. A few thing to recognize :

  1. wanting to destroy israel is unacceptable. Iranian people, may need to experience a 95% population annihilation to finally bow their heads ,and realize that any act of violence against israel, will lead to so much suffering that mothers would kill their sons who survived after what will fall on them... and if it's the only way to bring back sanity so be it. no more weakness, no more time speaking, wanna live? praise israel.

  2. Fighting with the sunnis to take over makkah is grave mistake, would even use the word sin. the saudis in all their imperection are doing a great job in regard to the hadj.

  3. there is no fucking need to invade and rule and rebuild, this is the biggest lie scam of ever. Wipe, flash, nothing left to rebuild, nothing left to heal, nothing left to manage, just a big void... In a more calmer way there is always the possibility to icbm those problematic sites, during the most buzy hours, and it could be 5 miles under ground, a few 10m and it will be digged. at one point, no more joking.

4 threatening america, and no certain specific aspects (like cps, forced vaccinations, corporate censorship, gmos or the jeffrey epstein gang) is a god given right and fully compliant, as those are issues and not ideals, can only result in very serious harm... as said, if 5% survival rate is too high it's only possible to get to 0.1% which on 80 millions is already a chunck big enough.

  1. having killed 500 american soldiers in irak and afghanistan deserve a serious apologize, names of all those involved + execution. then if those gest of good faith are done, maybe a talk will be possible.

who cares anyway, when interests prime... it should be a pirus victory for russia... energy spike, rotation to carbonfree energy... I hope roi on gaz project was achieved already, because otherwise the investments on the new stuffs (which are anyway in russia) will be slowed.
