Yes the dot projector makes a copy of your face using 30,000 dots which is feed into the neural network. The neural network updates itself with every scan you make, making it more and more efficient.

This may be of great help to the consumer, but what if someone strips away that data?

I also feel like its a risk to compile that kind of data but have you seen this https://steemit.com/funny/@quattrobit/watch-iphone-x-face-id-fail-during-keynote it doesnt seem like it worked well today haha

Yes saw that part.
Then again, fingerprints don't work at times as well. So let's give them the benefit of the doubt.

From my exp clean fingerprints on undamaged fingers work 99% of the time, with facial recognition there are so many variables, espeacially light with they had to add a illuminator for it to work in the dark .. blasting your eyes with light at night is going to be unpleasant

Maybe you didn't get the context properly. There no light involved in the dark. It's an infrared ray, used in night vision cameras.

Even though they are using infared There is a light flash involved.. they added foward facing light to the front of the phone for to aid the face scanner
