The new iPhone X: detailed technical analysis

in #iphone7 years ago

Following the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple has lived up to expectations and announced the new iPhone X, a model that completely changes the design of the family 10 years after the first iPhone.

iPhone X Analysis

The new iPhone X is Apple's most daring and comprehensive phone model since the first iPhone was introduced ten years ago. In its technical data sheet we find many new features, twists and turns and changes with respect to the bases that Apple had maintained for the iPhone in these ten years.

The biggest novelties are on the screen and the design, from whose revolution also changes the way Apple wants us to interact with the smartphone.

SCREEN 5.8 AMOLED (HDR)
RESOLUTION 2436x1125 pixels
PROCESSOR Apple A11 (6 cores)
RAM 3 GB
INTERNAL MEMORY 64 and 256 GB
BATTERY (quick and wireless charging)
DIMENSIONS 143.6x70.9x7.7 mm // 174 grams
MAIN CHAMBER 12 MP (f1.8) + 12 MP (f2.4) with OIS
SECONDARY CAMERA 7 MP (f2.2)
OTHERS Water resistance / Face ID

This seemed unthinkable on an iPhone is produced by the complete removal of the frames. The entire front of the iPhone X is its screen, and the change from previous iPhone models is enormous if you look at the top and bottom frames. To take into account the design in the form of flap of the screen at the top, peculiarity that will have its pros and cons in relation to the applications and the operating system.

The iPhone X is glass finish for both the front and back and comes with water and dust protection.

OLED technology arrives

To achieve this total front panel occupancy by the screen, Apple has switched to OLED technology. This change is quite significant in that the IPS technology and specifically the iPhone panel, beyond resolution, has been the benchmark in terms of fidelity and quality over the years.

The new screen has been dubbed the Super Retina HD Display, with a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels for a pixel density of 458 dpi. It has 3D Touch, is HDR and supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, plus True Tone. Its brightness is the same as in previous iPhone, with 625 nits, has a P3 profile and in this case, being OLED, contrast of 1.000.000:1

Farewell to the start button and Touch ID

As Samsung has been doing LG for many generations, occupying the entire front of the smartphone with the display has associated sacrifices and changes very important. On iPhone X, the start button as such disappears and the terminal control is based on gestures for display control, options and different actions in the iOS 11 interface.

Touch ID makes fingerprint identification so easy, it disappears. There is no transfer to the back as all your rivals have done (or to the side as Sony has). The iPhone X goes from Touch ID to risking face identification.

The Face ID sensor uses infrared sensors to detect our face from different angles and even partially hidden features. According to Apple, the recognition is in 3D, which would prevent a simple photograph or mask from being used to unlock the terminal.

To achieve this they use Neural Engine, technology integrated into the new A11 chip, and will even be able to identify faces with glasses. The challenge is important. By the way, Face ID will also function as a third party.

More power and battery with wireless charging

New iPhone, Apple processor premiere. The company's maxim is fully met in the new iPhone X, a smartphone that will enjoy the A11 Bionic processor, a model developed entirely by Apple and featuring six niches. With no specific data for now, this processor would be accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and a GPU that for the first time has also been created by Apple completely.

We will test the results in depth on the iPhone X, but based on previous experience, we have no doubt that Apple will continue to enjoy a competitive advantage based on the control of software+hardware that gives it maximum performance and up to all its rivals regardless of processor numbers or amount of RAM memory.

With regard to the battery, this new iPhone X has also been the incentive to take a step forward in a section where Apple had in some respects fallen far behind. While the iPhone has been able to remain competitive in real autonomy thanks to its efficiency, the same has not happened in charging possibilities.

Tarde pero Apple por fin se ha dado cuenta de lo necesaria que era la carga rápida (y la inalámbrica)

With the iPhone X we expect to see improved autonomy thanks to the use of OLED technology on the screen, as well as increased battery capacity. Apple has done something similar to what we saw in their Macbook and has taken advantage of the hollow house available inside the iPhone X to place battery cells.

More important will be to see the arrival of wireless charging on the iPhone X, as well as an expected fast charging that made the iPhone look ridiculous in front of its rivals.

The iPhone X Camera

Although on this iPhone 10 the attention is taken away by the display and the design change, we can never forget what has been a motive for purchase over the Apple phone for years: the camera.

The iPhone X camera is back to the dual-type camera, boosting or highlighting the portrait mode. They are two 12-megapixel sensors, larger in size to improve results in low light conditions, and will be able to record 4K video at 60 fps. It will also feature a 240fps slow motion mode with 1080p quality.

The aperture of the cameras is f/1.8 and f/2.4, with different focal lengths to achieve the 2X zoom. Optical stabilization reaches both cameras, as well as the use of a flash of 4 LEDs. And soon it will have an improved portrait mode.

Another important change in the iPhone X camera is the secondary camera, which raises its resolution to 7 MP (f2.2) and adds portrait mode. Apple, long after the rivals, has realized the importance of this camera for selfies.
