According to a new report from South Korea today it is said that Apple is investing about $ 2.7 billion in LG Display.

The point of this is to secure a stable supply of OLED panels for the coming iPhone, those coming in 2018 and beyond. We've already heard that Apple plans to go OLED for its handset starting next year, and it confirms it.

The investment will basically serve as a preliminary payment for OLED panels that will be produced in the future.

Apple has long been rumored to have made a deal with Samsung for the iPhone 8 OLED screen coming this year, but the company traditionally does not like relying solely on a supplier for a piece.

In addition, it needs to be sure there will be enough OLED panels listed for future generations of the iPhone. Going all-in with OLED will require a lot more screens from 2018 onwards, compared to what's needed for the iPhone 8 in 2017.
