STEEMZINE #8 - The Internet Of Things Explained Simply

in #iot8 years ago (edited)

You may have heard about The Internet Of Things (IoT) or Smart Cities, but may not completely understand what it's all about. I'm going to help you with that today.

IoT and Smart Cities really go hand in hand, slowly both these things are going to become part of our everyday lives.

We already have Smart Cities and districts under construction around the globe and IoT is amongst all of this.

Let's start with IoT. Imagine everything with an ON switch or an OFF Switch. Now imagine them all connected to the internet. That is the most basic idea of what the IoT is trying to achieve.

Your house is a good place to start; your kettle, fridge, lights, security systems, lamps, washing machines, ovens, microwaves and even your garage door....but the list goes on. The idea is to allow these devices to be controlled and connected, which would allow interactions to take place between you and the device, device and device, device and you.

What exactly are the benefits to my life though? Well, this is where the possibilities get exciting and interesting. Let's look at your morning routine.

You wake up at 8am, put the heater on, make a coffee and have a shower. Now with IoT in place. Your alarm rings at 8am, it notifies the heater to switch on and also the coffee machine to start brewing, you like the shower at a particular temperature so it automatically warms up so the water is perfect when you get in.

This is an example of how the IoT of things could impact your daily living. Make sense?

Smart Cities are simply cities that utilise the idea of IoT throughout the entire city. Where everything is connected and the city becomes self aware. Whether it be traffic lights, supplies such as water or power, the transportation systems - these elements become connected.

Through this connectivity, it would allow for mass data collection, in turn making the city more efficient and effective to interact with and also in relation to it's resources.

A couple examples would be street lights being controlled, being aware of people's presence and only going when needed or when buildings are constructed, they being fully embedded with technology to understand how the structure is utilising energy and when to power up or power down so to speak.

There you have it. That is IoT and Smart Cities explained in a nutshell.

The amazing thing this is already slowly happening, there are Smart Cities being constructed in India and China, connected devices are now becoming more and more prominent.

Soon enough it will infiltrate our world and our world will never look the same again.

I love the idea of IoT but it scares the hell out of me. Having a home and a city where everything is hackable, is just insanity and it will happen. Not to mention the ever intrusive governments who worry everyone is a terrorist or a threat to the establishment in some way. Now the entire home, city and office becomes a world wide wiretap. I know, The Dood's a bit paranoid, but I think these are all legitimate concerns that we need to consider before embracing these technologies. One of the things I like about blockchain tech is that it could help make the internet of things a little more secure and maybe a little more private. How do you feel about the security of these IoT devices?
