I own a few pieces of gold jewelry, but in the main I'm a silver girl. Not that I have a load of bling or anything, more like an assortment of odd earrings. I do though, have a ton (colloquially speaking) of silver coins celebrating the Chinese New Year. Is silver the new gold?

The Chinese issued coin series currently features the Chinese zodiac. Like the Western zodiac there are twelve characters. Unlike in the Western zodiac where the astrological figures are associated with your birth month, the Chinese are with your birth year. Twelve years being the length of time it takes Jupiter to orbit the sun.

In the Chinese zodiac animals represent each year. Starting with the Rat, next comes Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Sheep, Rooster, Dog, and finally Pig. I've dropped hints about the fact that as I was born in the year of the Dog, and 2018 is the year of the Dog, what a nice present idea that might be...I shall have to wait and see.

I enjoy and take pleasure from my collection, however it is still an investment. Much like stamp collections they can be a great way of preserving wealth. Both hobbies may seem old fashioned and the concept of being a way to save money, positively archaic. However, considering that we live in a world where banks are paying zero interest on savings, what does someone with a saver mentality do in this environment?

Well, there's a lot of be said for safety. Actually owning something physical. Something that's been desired by mankind and a part of our culture for millenniums. Something you know the guys at Cash Generators will take in a dire emergency situation. A very intelligent lady once said to me that the UK pound was backed by silver. That's not the case it's just another fiat currency. However I believed her statement displayed a deeper understanding that money should be backed by something. Further an awareness that historically precious metals performed this role.

Let's be frank here about the state of the financial mess the world is in. Nothing has been fixed since 2008, they have only blown everything up more. There is no way out of money printing (QE) except hyperinflation and capital destruction. We are heading for a reset. It is inevitable, it is a predicament, there can be no hoping it away. So having a safety asset is the wisest thing you can do.

Silver is also on sale. To produce an ounce of silver costs the top producers an average of $10.56.here Production has declined in the last two years due to complaints that there is a lack of mining profitability. Not surprising when you can buy the ever popular American Silver Eagle (1oz coin) for $19.38 or a Canadian Maple Leaf (1oz coin) for $19.09. Why such low prices? Well pure manipulation by central banks and governments to keep the price of precious metals down. Particularly gold (see the work of GATA ) and silver is closely related to gold. This is related to the aforementioned reset. To stabilise the world's finances gold may need to be re-introduced, perhaps into a basket of goods, and the world will move on from the Petro-dollar.

Fundamentally, if it were not for the suppression, the price of silver would be much higher. It is being used in our world increasingly as a component in popular technology. It is found in mobile phones, solar panels, touch screens, LED chips, weapons. It is a market where demand is strong and supply is drying up due to the suppression of price. Silver is a right steal in my view. Although I must point out that I'm not an investment advisor, anything you do with your money is completely up to you. This is just my opinion.
