But if you're actually being smart about it, you hold on to that painting instead of selling it for gold, right? That painting in this case looks to me like another thing holding its value, just like the gold.
Not necessaily. You want to sell the painting when it peaks in value and buy something else that has bottomed in value. Of course, this is very difficult to do.
