It would be naive to think that scientists haven't found better uses for uranium, like Minerva space travel and "drilling" for oil with small nuclear explosions.
When will we find out about the technology from our secret programs and black budgets? I think disclosure will come much more quickly when we really follow the money, the players and the metadata from Operation Paperclip to the present. The Coup D'etat of '63 in Dallas ensured that those in charge of our space and weapons technology in the 50's would still be calling the shots today, whether the programs are public or private/secret.
