I'm still figuring things out, like it seems like it's pretty round about to upload photos. Should I just upload outside of steem for my avatar, etc?

If the photos are from your desk top you should just be able to drag and drop into the text box. I think that they have to be jpg or gif so you may have to convert the files before they take. Give it a try!
*.PNG can aslo be drag and drop, I'm loving how easy it is, also there is the https://guides.github.com/features/mastering-markdown/
