Hi @jwood27! Welcome to steemit. Could you please post a pic with a steemit sign or post a message on the other sites you own announcing that you are now a new member of steemit? Unfortunately there are always fake accounts so many steemians won't upvote your posts until they are certain you are a real account owner :o)

Hi @jwood27, the idea is to prevent identity theft cases. If you announce on your FB account that you are entering steemit (it is closed account so only your fb friends could see) or on any of your other social network sites it would help to "validate" your account in the eyes of other steemians.
PS: taxation is theft ;o)
