A historical workplace
Hello friends my name is shehzad and today i am introducing you people a historical place which is also my work place. I am a college teacher . i teach physics in a college whose name is D.J Sindh govt science college which was established in 1887 in Karachi ( Pakistan).
History:
D.J is the abbrevation of Dayram Jethamal who was a prominent philanthropist and a famous lawyer and founder of this college. He realized the value and the need of higher education for Sindhis. Before 1887 there was no college in Sindh. The students of Sindh Region had to go Bombay for higher education as the Sindh(province of Pakistan ) was part of Bombay( now mumbai, india) preidency. Only few students could afford to go Bombay for higher education as it was highly expensive. Due to this reason not a single Sindhi had been able to obtain any degree in science.
At that time journey to Bombay was vey difficult by road. The sea journey was much easier but in monsoon no one could go by boat. Considering these difficulties Diwan Dayaram Jethamal along with some leading and influential citizens of Karachi approached and requested the government to establish a college which would be affiliated to Bombay university. Afterwards on 17th january 1887 Lord Reay, Governor of Bombay performed the opening cermony in rented bungalow belonging to Diwan Shivandas and Tikamdas,
Initially there were staff of five professors and only twenty eight students out of which only three students passed examination. Nearly half of the students were above twenty five years i.e older than some of professors. At that time it was rare for a student to finish the three years course in one attempt. Some professors due to shortage of staff taught varous subjects .
The university of Bombay recognized college on 14th April 1887 as the arts college. The college was named Sindh Arts college. In 1891 the name was changed from Arts college to Dayaram Jethamal Sindh College ( D.J Sindh College ) due to his efforts for establishing the college.
From the begining college was funded by local government , donors and run by Board of Governors under supervision of government. Dr. Walmsley (Prof. Of Science and English ) was the first Principal of college who served only one year and resigned because it was not technical or Science College for which he was not fitted by knowledge and training.
Law classes were also started in 1890 and later on science classes were also started. With the efforts of Dayaram Jethamal and Bulchand Dayaram construction of new building started. The foundation stone of main building was laid by Lord Dufferin Viceroy of Infia on 14th of November 1887and completed in five years i.e 1892 at the cost of Rs. 186514. Out of which the government contributed Rs. 97913. remaining was contributed by donors from civil society. The college was formally openend by Mr. Jemes the commissioner in Sindh on 15 th october 1892.
With the passage of time more and more students switch over to the study of science therefore in the year 1940 D.J was divided into two separate faculties of Arts and Science College. After five years i.e 1945 both colleges were again fused into one college under one principal.
AFTER PARTITION
In 1947 the board of Governors handed over the college to the Sindh govt on 20th June 1948. After that Arts faculty was closed down and college was known as D.J Sindh Govt Science College. Professor A.L Shiekh was appointed the principal of college. He was old student of this college. At that time following subjects were taught.

Library ( Lord Reay Memorial Library)
In the Novemberbof 1887 i.e few months after the college started, Lala Behrumal who had already donated handsome amount for the college made an offer of Rs.20000. to the college fo the library which was on his name but he only donatedRs.3500. Hence ,his name was dropped. After few year later lord Reay donated Rs.11810. to this college and library was named the "Lord Reay Memorial Libray". It startes workingbin1892.
The D.J college produced students who have achieved great success and fame, several of them have become prominent engineers, doctors, surgeon, scientists, lawywes, politicians, judges and some have joined the civil service and taken up responsibile administrative posts.
