Intro by a Starving Fine Art PhotographersteemCreated with Sketch.

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

I am a starving fine art photographer living and working in Monterey, California. Unlike many photographers that I know, I never got a camera from my dad when I was a kid. As a result, my passion for photography came later in my life. I did start classical music and painting education at a very early age though.

Although I used film cameras and learned my way around the darkroom when I was in college, it was only many years later that I turned to photography as a form of artistic expression. I bought a digital camera at the end of 2006 after reading a fine art issue of Rangefinder Magazine showcasing the work of very talented and inspirational artists such as Teresa Airey, Brigitte Carnochan, and Thomas Kellner. "These artists make art", I realized. I wanted to make art too, be an image maker.

That is when my photography journey began. I started like everyone else, I guess, reading everything I could about photography and taking workshops. I learned about Ansel Adams' zone system, the rule of thirds, pinhole photography and cyanotypes.

I started taking photos of sunsets and wildlife, so abundant where I live. This is the first photo that showed me that I kind of had an eye for it and encouraged me to keep going:

This is the first image that got a major award from a prestigious photo competition. "Guardians of the Lake" got the 1st place in fine art category from the International Color Awards in 2010:

And this image got second place from the Black & White Spider Awards, wildlife category in 2011:

Given my painting background, I like images that have a painterly look and I am starting to incorporate more and more of that now. I try to accomplish that using various techniques including panning the camera while using a low shutter speed. In post production, I like to apply textures and paint with Photoshop brushes. I will be sharing more of my work with you in the future.

In 2017 I got interested in cryptocurrencies, bought some Bitcoins and Ethers and my readings on the subject led me to Steam and Steamit. I created my account a few months back, but life got in the way. Now, I will be publishing more consistently about photography and my work. I hope you will enjoy and follow me.

I would like to thank @kellyjanderson for encouraging me to write a proper introduction and providing me his intro as a kind of template.

Update: given some doubts about the ownership of one of my photos that I submitted to a popular photo contest here, I am including that photo, titled "Lightscape n. 1", here:
