13 of The Craziest Photos from China's World Robot Conference

Each year, the bleeding-edge developments in robotics and engineering are put on display at the World Robot Conference held in Beijing, China.

It's a chance for companies and students to reveal the products and software that could redefine what it means to be human - including artificial limbs, humanoid robots, and animatronic dogs.

Consider the conference a window into the artificially-intelligent future.

Introduce Yourself; 13 of the craziest photos from China's World Robot Conference.

Medical science stands to gain a lot from advances in artificial limbs. Kinfinity Glove, developed by the German Aerospace Center, debuted a sleek, mechanical hand.

Visitors also had the opportunity to watch robots make ice cream cones. It's an early sign of the kind of low-skill jobs that may be at risk in the coming years.

While people walked the conference floor, staff released several autonomous robots that roved the event. Competitions between college students were also held to see which school's robot best executed certain commands. what does it mean to gauge robot autonomy?

Robotic dogs also made an appearance.

True to their dutiful spirit, a team of SoftBank's Pepper robots awaited instructions from the human directing them.

Meanwhile, a small army of other robots were plugged into the wall to charge. Even machines get tired.

At one point, robots made by the company Senpower performed a synchronized dance routine for onlookers.

They also made good companions during the rainier portions of the conference.

Many of the robots were self-learning, meaning they responded to people's unique preferences and instructions without any pre-programming from the designers.

But perhaps the most prominent trend was the raft of personal assistant robots. The Padbot T2 is an updated version of the original Padbot telepresence robot, built with a more user-friendly design.

Other drone makers showed off underwater models that can capture footage while people swim and Scuba-dive.

Drone manufacturers demoed models that communicated with skull caps so people could control the flying machines with brain signals alone.

One of the most iconic (and surreal) ways to use AI is in humanoid robots, which require assistants to apply their makeup just like any other star.
