What is steemit?

-- Dah! It’s a word.

But what does it mean?

--I honestly think it’s urban slang for ‘steam it’. You know like… “How should I cook the steak?” “Steem it!”

Okay … I guess that is one way you can look at it. But what is Steemit.com?

--Dah! It’s a website.

Okay just shut up from now and let me explain.

So what is steemit.com?

Ofcourse its a website! But what does it do? It works, earning a minimum wage.

Okay jokes aside. Or more accurately jokes on top. :)

Steemit is like facebook built on the blockchain. Unlike facebook where most of the profits going to make the founders billionaires, the profits on steemit are awarded to users who add value to the platform.

--Oh, now I see!... I’ve just opened my eyes.

The fact that it’s built on the blockchain, means that it is a decentralised application… it has no central governing body or company. It is governed by the people. Also means that censoring of the content is done by the users using their upvotes and downvotes.
Imagine if you got paid for all you participation on facebook. The more your post gets engagement the more you get paid. Why should you get paid for nothing? Well… Breaking News: that's not nothing. Without the users facebook would be nothing. Therefore the users create the value that facebook has. But the money goes to a few at the top. Yup, it's like a pyramid. But on steemit the money is awarded according to the value that other users say your content has. And they do that using upvotes, downvotes and engagement.
