Awesome review on mining, especially for a beginner like me. I recently have tried to mine on minergate with my MacBook. Checkout the post on my blog.
Have you tried the USB miners like from Gekkoscience? I am curious how they perform and how hard they are to install.

No I didn't, but I've mined with my Lenovo y70 and decided to stop that shit )) Now I'm waiting for Digging, it is cheaper )))
When EDC has low difficult (1day) I have got 1 reward for 1 block (3400 edc) )) this week or next they going to be listed at exchanges and i will get my firs mining money ))
