An Introduction To Me, Or How I Survive As A 29/yo Retired Snowbird

Hello :) Im Jessica.

steemit2.jpg

On the surface, my lifestyle has been suspiciously similar to my grandparents' in recent years. I have worked very little in the traditional sense, summered in Minnesota where I hatched 29 years ago, and then fled to warmer climates by late autumn.

Them: Phoenix, Arizona retirement complex. 65+ is a must. Shuffleboard: taken pretty seriously by the community.

Me: México. Spain. Morocco. New Zealand. Fluctuating levels of credit card debt and mild poverty-induced weight loss. Ever-expanding interior world and passion for birdwatching.

How do I do it?

  1. I work seasonally (summers only) as a baggage handler for an airline in Minnesota, and I am able to get cheap flights year round.
  2. I prioritize new experiences over possessions (apart from music equipment) and career stability/a 401k -- will I regret this? Ha.
  3. I travel non-luxuriously by working odd jobs and in exchange for food/accommodation. I sleep in a tent whenever possible. I also make websites -- check out @jessandthesea's http://sexonsundaze.com :)

I just set down some baby roots, however, with my wildly beautiful and talented partner, @amyinautumn. We've been traveling and playing music together for a few years and decided to build a nest in Minneapolis for the upcoming year (aka we signed a lease!). I'll finish handling bags in October, and then I plan to devote lots of time to our music projects: Bathing Belles, and possibly a couple new collaborations with fellow Minneapolis residents.

I'll hopefully be able to survive by contract web design/development jobs and perhaps some casual captioning/transcription work. I plan to visit @jessandthesea in Mexico for a month or so when the cold becomes unbearable here, but no long excursions planned for this winter. Staying in one place with access to the resources/equipment I've built up over the years = no excuses, and giving myself the best chance to be creative and make things that I feel proud of. ❤

I am excited to have found this new community of likeminded digital friends here on Steemit, where we can all share our successes and failures along the way.

Wow you life an interesting life and travel so much and so I am looking forward to more posts from you. I travel too, but only about once or twice a day. And this year, I am going to my grand adventure, The Trans Mongolia Rail.
I have written a post about how to get followers to help newbies like you.

I like your philosophy on living life for the experiences instead of the pursuit of possessions. Upvoting and following...looking forward to the great things you'll contribute to Steemit!

Congratulations on living the life of your choosing!

You know, I read an article a while back where some economist was hand-wringing about how the economy is at risk because "young people" just don't want to buy things anymore. It made me laugh because I'd recently realized that everything I owned was holding me back.

Best of luck in your future projects.

Hey, thanks. There is a minimalism documentary on Netflix that mildly feels like an advertisement for apple products, but it's pretty good :) I hadn't heard that about young people buying less, that's interesting.

I like those minimalism guys - I read their book when I met a guy who used to work for them and he gave me a copy. Came at a good time in my life.

I know what you mean about Apple co-opting the message with their "sleek, minimal" products. As with all movements, it can mean different things to different people and so marketers tend to get their hands in. Kind of goes against the point!

Hey @kindstranger! (That has a nice ring to it :))
Welcome!

I relate a lot to what you're saying - collecting experiences and not settling. And sometimes feeling like being retired already - in good way! I've been hearing myself say this a lot lately Why should I wait until retirement to enjoy my life? :)

Looking forward to your stories!

@itchykitten this is my best friend (also Jessica!) who actually told me first about Steemit <3 I feel like you guys could also have a lot in common!

Welcome to steemit!
I really like the second picture with the DX7, really a great synthesizer :-)

Hey @schererf, good eye :) A friend left his at my house for a couple weeks-- that thing is amazing! Now I have his Roland D-50. Have you used it? I'm trying to find a video of this patch that I think is so beautiful called Soundtrack...

A friend of mine had a DX7, we used it for one of our music projects. But this is really a long time ago. But if you believe it or not, I still own a D50 too :-)
I'm a ROLAND fan starting with the D10, then bought a second-hand D50 and at least used a XV-5080. But after getting dusty I sold the XV-5080 weeks ago.
I remember the Soundtrack patch that uses fifth notes and an changing HiPass Filter or something like that...

Welcome to Steem @kindstranger I have upvoted and sent you a tip
