"Dili lalim ang makasinati ug depresyon. Dili sya mahulagway pero sa kasinatian gihinay-hinay ug kumot ang imong kasingkasing. Wala naka kabantay, gihinay-hinay na diay ka ug patay. "

The passage above is in Cebuano, a language in the Philippines, which says it's not easy to be in the state of depression. It's indescribable yet experientially, it's like your heart is slowly being crushed. Unaware, it is already killing you slowly.

Dear readers,

I grew up in a family where accomplishment counts all the time. I knew alot of individuals whose families find them a dishonour unless they give them satisfactorily what they wanted. This is an example where potentially depression kicks in. There are many causes of depression. These include but not limited to problems inclined to family, education, personality and even to health. But there is one thing we all need to reconsider, it can also be due to no apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects physical and mental health. An individual can experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time, could be weeks, months or even years. Prior to this, again, I would like to point out that this is a serious and should be taken care of critically. I've seen the worst case scenario brought by this inner feeling, suicide. We don't want that to happen.

It's important to remember that an individual can't always identify the cause of depression or change difficult circumstances. But the most important thing is to recognise the signs and symptoms and seek support.

Speaking of the signs and symptoms, the contributing factor lies with the behaviour, feelings, thoughts, and physical aspect. The behaviour includes not going out anymore, not getting things done at work/school, withdrawing from close family and friends, relying on alcohol and sedatives, not doing usual enjoyable activities, unable to concentrate, etc. Concerning feelings, we could feel guilty, irritable, frustrated, lacking in confidence, unhappy, indecisive, disappointed, miserable, sad, etc. Having thoughts of being a failure and worthless, believing nothing good ever happens and concluding people would be better off without you are signs of depression. Physical changes can also be a sign which includes being tired all the time, headaches and muscle pains, sleep problems, loss or change of appetite and significant weight loss or gain. If considerable signs as stated are being experienced then most likely one is depressed.

Studies observed different kinds of depression and one thing is for sure, they are treatable. One thing I would like to point out and I believe to eradicate depression is to just talk. Dont be afraid to talk. Talk to the Lord, to your family, close friends, and even to psychologist and health professionals. Think of the people around you, who love you and care for you. You are a great loss to them if you let depression overcome you and consecutively end up your life. Live! Make your life worth living. Despite the circumstances you are in, even though it's hard, try at least to talk. Yes, accept that you cannot control everything, well, here is a fact ... no one can. There are still many out there who appreciate you and are waiting for you. Live mate! Live!

If you're not on this state, it doesn't mean this is not for you. In fact, the burden lies in your hand. You play a great role on this. Do your part, be sensitive and talk nicely to everyone. Encourage the people around you. Don't let anyone you know end up getting rid of their life. If they did, you just failed them. But dont be discouraged, instead be determined. There are still many of them waiting for your helping hand. They need you. Be a channel of hope to them.

How we all need to realize the beauty of life and everything it encompasses. Choose life. Live!

Sincerely yours,
Kim

Great article. I myself have been depressed many times before over things that don't even matter now. One thing I learned is that if you are depressed over something, imagine yourself 10 years from now and think whether people would still care about that failure or mistake you've made. Happy steeming!

Thank you for giving insights on this matter sir @ruel.cedeno ... considering MSU-IIT, it just concerned me that recently, suicide became a mainstream. These past consecutive years, depression took some young fellow and it's bothering me. Prior to the scenario, my very goal of this post is to raise awareness ... hoping to eradicate this silent killer, depression.
